“What?”

“Yeah, right.” He slumps back in the chair. “She pulled up about three hours ago and started to unload plants and bags of dirt from her car. Said the backyard needed some help. It’s weird, having a woman around.” He runs a hand up his tattooed arm. “You guys are doing good. I take it?”

I shrug. Are we?

It’s been two weeks since I surrendered to what I feel for her, and I’m more fucked up now than ever.

“Where’s Lix?” I evade the question.

“He’s with Erickson. They went sparring. I don’t think Erickson knows what he’s getting into.” He laughs, letting me off the hook.

“Right,” I chuckle. “I don’t think any of us do,” I say, shaking my head. “Well, I’m going to check on Cassie.”

He nods and sits up in the chair, going back to what he was working on at the desk.

I make my way around the side of the house and turn the corner. She’s hands deep in the ground, flowers all around her, adding color to the sublime scene.

I could get used to finding her like this. In my home. In my life. In my heart.

She wipes her forehead and catches me coming at her. She pulls off her earbuds and sits back on the ground. Her clear blue eyes sparkle up at me.

“Hi,” she finally says, regenerating the tingles back into my body.

I smile. “Hi.” I stop in front of her. “Gardening?”

“It relaxes me.”

I crouch down to her level. “Hard day at the job?” I wipe a smudge of dirt from her cheek.

She stares at me for a few seconds.

“Job.” She hefts a shoulder. “Life. You.” She kisses me on the cheek.

“Me?” Confusion tips my head.

“What’s going on here?”

I glance at the plants. “Well, it looks like you’re tearing up my backyard.” I evade the real question she’s asking, but unlike Cole, I don’t think she’ll let me off the hook.

“Don’t worry. I’ll put it all back together when I’m done.” She smirks, surprising me.

I gaze into her eyes, confused as to why she needs to be gardening because of me.

I get it. I haven’t been open with what’s going on between us. Hell, I don’t know. It’s a question I refuse to ask myself. Then I’d have to face the truth.

“Need any help?”

“No. It’s my mess. I’ll clean it up.”

“Are you sure?” I grin. “I don’t mind getting a little dirty.”

“Really?” Her lips part as she takes her time inspecting me as she removes her gloves. “How dirty are you willing to get?”

“However dirty you need me.”

“I don’t know.” She taps a finger against her lip. “Up to this point, you’ve been pretty clean.”

“My apologies.” I chuckle. “I promise I’ll do better.” Understanding what she’s hinting at.
