Adrian

Something shifted with Harper. I can feel it in the air, but I’m not sure what it is. The shadow shifter could have killed her, but it seemed too easy.

“I think this whole thing was a set up,” I say, ignoring her request for me to spill. There’s no way I’m going to tell her what I uncovered in front of other people.

“What does that mean?” she asks. “And why are you dodging my question? Again.”

“Someone wanted to see what you’d do,” I say. “A shadow shifter is ruthless but they’re usually sent on a specific mission. Unless it was told to kill you, you weren’t in harm’s way.”

Liam takes a step toward me. His whole body is tense and his hands are balled into fists. I’ve known him as long as I can remember. We were kids together. I’m five years older than him and worked in his father’s inner circle. I’d seen what a lazy playboy he was. Though, his actions now were different. He seems to care about Harper.

“You weren’t there,” Liam says. “Even if it wasn’t a risk, it was too much. If you know something, now’s the time.”

I looked from Liam to Harper, then back again. My eyes widen. I could feel it between them. The thread connecting them the same way I was connected to Harper.

I know that multiple mating bonds can be formed by certain beings. Fae, being one of them. But angels? That wasn’t in any of my books.

“You two?” I ask.

“You got a problem with it?” Liam asks.

I shake my head. “This complicates things.”

“What am I missing?” Sadie asks.

“We can’t talk here,” I say.

“Alright, my room,” Liam says.

“No,” Harper says. “Neutral territory. My room.”

“You sure you want everyone to hear this?” I ask.

“They’re in it now,” she says. “Unless they don’t want to be.” She turns to Liam, then Sadie.

Sadie grabs her hand. “I’m in.”

“Let’s get this over with,” Liam says.

We all follow Harper and Sadie into their room and as soon as the door closes, I let it out. “I found one workaround but I don’t like it.”

“Come on, Adrian,” Harper says.

I ignore the knowing look Sadie is giving me. Liam seems like he already knows that Harper and I have a different kind of relationship. And since his dad hasn’t come down on me, I have to believe he’s kept it to himself.

Maybe he isn’t as much of a spoiled brat as I thought he was.

“Alright, so the king wants to bind your magic to his, right?” I say.

“Yes, we already figured that out,” Liam says.

Sadie pulls Harper closer to her. I’m glad she’s so protective of her friend.

“But I found out you can only bind your magic once,” I say. “So if you bind it to someone else, he can’t touch you.”

Everyone is silent. It’s not a good option and we all know it.
