And he knew exactly what my weaknesses were.

My sister was only alive because of the expensive treatments he paid for. Without it, she was a as good as dead.

While he says we’re square, and says he’ll continue to pay, he’s not fae. He can lie. And I know he will get his way.

“You’re right,” I finally say. “It’s too dangerous for either of us.”

“Corbin,” Sadie says quietly.

“What?” I ask, turning to her.

“Corbin,” she repeats. “He’s good, and kind, and he loves you.”

Harper looks down at her hands. “He does love me. Even though I don’t deserve it.”

“You deserve it,” Sadie says. “Don’t ever say that.”

“I can’t ask that of him,” Harper says. “It’s too much.”

“Then you win the pass,” Liam says. “You don’t have a choice.”

Harper looks broken and I know there’s nothing I can do to help her. I can’t hold her, I can’t give her a way out of this. I can’t do anything. I feel helpless. “There has to be another way.”

“Like what?” Liam asks.

“I don’t know,” I say. “But I’m going to keep looking in the books.”

“Hey, on the plus side, you should have earned a shit ton of points for defeating that shadow shifter,” Sadie says.

Harper laughs and I smile despite the inner turmoil. It’s good to hear her laugh.

Sadie’s eyes widen. “That’s it!”

“What?” Harper asks.

“We can goose the system,” she says.

“I’m not sure I like where you’re going with this,” I say.

“No, it’s a great idea,” Liam says. “We can control it. And I can be there as backup.”

“What are you talking about?” Harper asks.

“What if we summon monsters on purpose?” Sadie asks. “The only way you’re going to win this thing is if your magic scores are off the charts. So the king can’t bring your score down with the final exam.”

“You want me to purposefully fight monsters?” I ask.

“Why not?” Liam says. “We can help if you need it but she’s right, it’s a way to game the system.”

“Why isn’t everyone doing that then?” I ask.

“They are,” Sadie says. “But they usually take out other students to do it. Whoever put that hex on our door got points for that. I have a feeling you don’t want to go that route?”

Harper presses her lips together. “Well, not for just anyone but maybe I’d make an exception for a couple of people.”

“I like evil Harper,” Liam says.

“That opens her up to retaliation,” I say.
