I’m relieved to be alone in my room. This was not the first day back I expected. But then again, in a weird way, it was.
Someone burned a whole through my chair, someone sent a monster to kill me. Then there was the whole being threatened by a royal thing. Well, that wasn’t expected.
The King of Keys wants my power. The Princess of Glass wants me dead. And she killed my mother. So there’s that to deal with.
Add in the fact that Liam, the adopted son of the evil king and nephew to the murdering psycho princess, says I’m his mate…
Okay, it didn’t go anything like I expected.
But there is some relief in coming up with a plan. It’s insane. And it’s likely going to get me killed but it’s what I have. I suppose summoning monsters on purpose is better than waiting for them to come to me.
I roll over in bed and bury my face in my pillow. I don’t want to do this. I don’t want any of this. I don’t want magic, or power, or royalty. I just want to go home.
For a second, I tell myself I don’t want Adrian or Liam or the twins. But I know that’s not true. Those guys and Sadie are the only good things to come from this. Even as fucked up as Liam is, I know I’m not going to be able to walk away from him. Or Adrian.
I close my eyes and send my magic through the wall.Adrian, you there?
I’m here.His reply came so quickly that I wonder if he was in my head this whole time.
Am I insane?I ask. Because I feel insane. My stomach is in knots and my head can’t make sense of this mess I’ve gotten myself into.

It’s not reassuring.Am I going to pull this off?
I wait in the silence of my dark room. My heart thumps in my chest. Harder with each passing second of heavy silence.
I hope so.
“Good talk,” I shout through the wall.
He doesn’t respond which is just as well. I’ve got a lot to figure out this week. With classes, we won’t have enough free time to try summoning a monster so I’ve got a few days to talk myself into this.
In a million years, I never thought my weekend plans would be: summon a monster and try to kill it for funsies.
I’m so in over my head.
