On my way back to my room on Friday I stop at the rank boards. I’m not even placing after a week of keeping my head down. To my surprise, nobody who was on the board before is there. I don’t recognize any of the names.

Frowning, I realize that the only reason I wasn’t dodging attacks from others all week was because I’m not seen as a threat.

Whoever Magnus Jones is, he’s in first place. And I doubt he’ll last long. Not even Liam is ranking.

My brow furrows as I consider how strange the shift is on my walk to my room. How do Liam and Em and all the other favorites suddenly cease to exist on the ranks? Not even one of them on there is rather suspicious.

As usual, I duck down and check my doorknob for any signs of hexes. It’s blissfully clear. Before I get my key in the lock, the door opens and Sadie smiles at me. “You’re going to the party, right?”

“Well, hello to you too,” I say.

She’s been spending most of her evenings with her new boyfriend and I haven’t even seen her since Tuesday.

“Don’t be like that,” she says.

“I’m not being like anything,” I say.

“I know I haven’t been around much, but it’s not like you need me. How many men are you juggling?” She winks.

The men in my life are causing stress more than anything else right now. I feel guilty when I talk to any of them so I spent the week sitting with the other non-demons at lunch and keeping conversations causal in classes.

With the exception of the invitation to a certain party. When I consider it, I might have spent more time with Corbin this week if it didn’t mean having to deal with Damon. I wasn’t in the mood for him lately and I didn’t feel like explaining anything to him.

“I’m happy for you, Sadie,” I say. “Really, I am.”

She frowns. “But something’s wrong. Did I miss something? More threats from people or monsters? Please tell me there weren’t any more monsters.”

I laugh. “No, not yet, anyway.”

“Right,” she says. “This weekend’s big plans.”

I shake my head, not wanting to think about purposefully summoning monsters. “Hey, party?”

“Yes, I’m going with Lance. You want to join us?” she asks.

“No, I don’t want to third wheel with you and your boyfriend,” I say. “Besides, I have a date.”

“Which one of your guys is the lucky choice tonight? Or did you get them to play nice and go together?”

“First of all, one of those guys is a professor and the other is the son of the dude who wants to keep me here forever,” I say.

“Yeah, that does complicate things,” she says. “But which one?”

“Neither,” I say. “Corbin.”

“Adding a new man, I like it,” she says.

“Maybe,” I say. “I’m still getting used to all this you know.”

“I know,” she says. “It’s different than your world but you’ll get used to it.”

There’s a knock on the door and I jump. Sadie runs to look through the peep hole. “It’s Lance.”

She opens the door. “You’re early.”
