“I couldn’t wait,” he says.

“I’m not even changed,” she says.

He pushes his way in and doesn’t even notice me in the room. “Then let me help you get changed.”

Sadie giggles and the two of them walk to her room.

I’m left standing in the middle of our dorm, the door still open, staring after her. “What the fuck just happened?”

Sadie’s giggles give way to moans and my cheeks heat. I don’t want to listen to that.

Quickly, I close the door and head to my room. The party won’t start for a few hours, so I have some time to kill.

I pick up one of the books I checked out from the library and start reading. Surprisingly, reading about summoning monsters and ways to defeat them isn’t as exciting as you’d think.

After a few chapters, I’m over it and I close the book. I managed to kill an hour and the light outside has faded to the point where it’s getting too dark to read without the lamp.

I close my curtains and flip on a lamp before heading to my bathroom. A long hot shower and blow drying my hair will take care of another hour without me having to think too much about my relationships or my upcoming purposeful monster battles.

By the time I’m dressed and ready, Corbin is knocking on my door. He’s dressed in dark jeans and a tight black tee shirt. Anddamnhe fills out that shirt nicely. My core is already tingling just from seeing him standing in my doorway smiling at me.

His stormy gray eyes seem to go right through me and he smirks. For a second, he looks more like Damon and my heart races at the thought. I’ve always put Corbin in the nice guy category but I have a feeling there’s a naughty streak there too.

“You ready?” he asks, offering his hand.

I accept and his touch sends tingles up and down my arm. We’ve always had something special, but I’ve never reacted to him this physically before. Part of me wants to drag him back to my room and skip the party. But he’s already started leading me down the hall.

I’ve been to my share of parties now at Brimstone. They’re always different than you expect. But the one thing they have in common is loud music and more booze than a frat house could drink in a year.

These demons can really hold their liquor. And it’s not normal liquor. Not the stuff I drank back home. It’s something made here in the underworld. Or occasionally, they have fae wine. That shit will really fuck you up.

I’ve learned to be careful with my consumption.

But even as I remind myself to keep things under control, I feel a rebellious streak rising. I don’t want to play it safe. I want to have some fun.

Nothing is going as I expected it to. I’ve got two royals after me and I’m not even on the rank wall. What do I have to lose if I let go a little tonight?

The sound of the music is muffled through the magically sealed wall. The second we pass through, it surrounds me, calling me like a siren. The floor vibrates and I can’t help but smile.

Tonight the party is lit in blue lights with bright spots of white sparkles hanging in the air. It’s as if we’re walking into the night sky. Tension melts away as the music, laughter, and atmosphere take over.

Corbin squeezes my hand and I look over at him. He’s grinning and I’m sure my expression matches his. I get the sense that he’s just as eager as I am to forget about the first week of school and let go.

Damon appears in front of us and I’m too happy to care that he’s already crashing my date.

“I come in peace,” he says, holding up three glasses.

I don’t hesitate to take one and throw the bright green liquid back all at once.

“Wow, Harper,” he says as he passes another glass to me. “Here, have mine.”

I shrug, and take the offered glass. I drink it just as quickly. Then I take the third one and hand it to Corbin.

He slams his drink and passes the glass back to Damon.

“Thanks, Damon,” I say as I drag Corbin away from him to the dance floor.

“You’re welcome,” he calls from behind us.
