“How was he last time you saw him?” he asks.

“I haven’t seen him,” I say. “They say he’s not taking visitors.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” he says.

“I know,” I say.

“You two better get to work.” Professor Lee is standing right next to us.

I glance around the room. It’s mostly empty. A few pairs are sitting next to each other with a book open between them. Most of the class left.

“Right, thanks,” I say, grabbing my bag. “Library?”

“Good idea,” Damon says.

“Don’t disappoint me,” Professor Lee says. “See you in four weeks.”

I missed that part of the directions but I’m grateful. Four weeks of not having to see Tasha and Em in class sounds perfect.

As soon as we’re in the hall, I try to remember the details of the assignment. I don’t want Damon to fail because I can’t focus. “So we have to create a potion?”

“Or a spell,” he says. “But that can wait. We should find out what happened to Liam.”

“Since when do you care about Liam?” I ask.

“I don’t,” he says. “I care about you.”

Flutters fill my chest. “Cause of Corbin?”

He stops walking and gently guides me to the side of the hall. We’re standing against the wall and my heart is hammering in my chest. He’s nearly identical to his brother. Though, when he smiles, he’s got a dimple on his right cheek that Corbin doesn’t have. There’s also something about the way he carries himself.

Even when they’re not standing next to each other, I no longer have any problem knowing exactly which twin I’m looking at. What happened the first time Damon and I kissed would never happen again. Now that I know them so well, it’s hard to believe I ever mixed them up in the first place.

“Harper, can’t you tell how I feel about you?” he says.

“Like you want to get me in your bed?” I tease, even though I know it’s not entirely true. Not anymore, at least.

He smiles. “Well, there’s that, of course. But it’s not just that. I care about you.”

“I care about you, too,” I say.

“Great,” he says. “But I’m serious. Not like friends. More than that.”

“Why do you think I kissed you?” I ask with a grin. I didn’t stop and think about it at the time. We’d nearly died right before I kissed him last time. But if I’m being true to myself, I have to admit that there are feelings there. Serious not just friend feelings.

“Cause we almost died?”

I shake my head. “You’re impossible.”

He leans closer to me and I slide my hand around the back of his head, tangling my fingers in his hair. He takes the cue and lowers his face to mine. His kiss is surprisingly gentle. Slow, easy, soft, comfortable. As if we’ve been kissing for years. It’s familiar and satisfying and everything I needed it to be.

He pulls away from the kiss and lingers, his lips inches from mine. I want to wrap my legs around him and feel his body pressed against mine. But I wait, silently staring back into his eyes. It’s strangely intimate. And for once, I don’t feel the need to add conversation to a quiet moment.

The two of us just exist there. For several long minutes, we take each other in.

When the sound of someone walking down the hall shatters the silence, we break eye contact and move away from the wall. Without talking about what just happened, we continue on toward the library.

My heart is still racing when we settle into a table in the dim room. I’m not sure where things are going with Damon, but I can’t wait to find out.
