Harper

Every day, I visit the hospital. Every day, I’m sent away. The nurse assures me that Liam is recovering, but it’s been a week. After Professor Lee’s comments, I have to know.

I lean against the wall outside the door that leads to the school hospital. I want to believe the nurse. I want to believe that Liam is in there healing. But how do I even know if that’s true?

Closing my eyes, I wish I had Adrian’s ability to read minds. I straighten as the idea crashes in around me. Can I channel his magic from here? I’ve never tried anything from so far away.

This seems like as good a time as any to test it out.

I take a deep breath and close my eyes again, feeling for the thread of Adrian’s magic. It’s a familiar feeling. I go to sleep at night with the sensation of it nearby.

Surprisingly, I find it quickly. It’s weaker than usual, but it’s there. I tug on it, urging his magic to combine with mine, to feed me.

I feel it swirl inside me and I hope it’s enough to search for Liam behind the walls.

A woman’s thoughts drift to me. She’s thinking about a sandwich. My stomach groans. I skipped breakfast again to come here right away. While her thoughts about chicken and bacon smothered in ranch dressing are delicious, they’re not what I’m after.

I send the magic forward blindly, hoping I can encounter what I’m looking for. More thoughts about food. A couple of people thinking about sex. Someone thinking about their puppy.

I now understand why Adrian says he was cursed with this. It’s annoying to listen to other people’s thoughts. And they aren’t nearly as interesting as you’d hope.

Finally, there’s something promising. A flicker of a thought about me.

When will that girl get it? The poor prince and his fan club.

I frown. It’s the nurse who sent me away. She thinks I’m some random girl who wants Liam for his title. If only she knew how often I consider wishing this bond away.

I push forward, hoping I can find Liam.

Then I feel it. A heavy sadness. It’s dark and angry. Swirling like storm clouds. It feels different than anything I’ve felt before.

I have to get out of here.

It’s Liam. I know it is.

He’s angry and upset.Liam? Can you hear me?I try it out, even though I know it won’t work without him channeling the same magic I am.

Of course there’s no reply.

I try to listen to him again, but the thread snaps and the connection is gone. I’ve lost Adrian’s magic. But at least I know Liam’s in there and he’s alive. But now I feel worse.

He’s miserable.

“Harper, what are you up to?” Adrian asks.

I jump, surprised that the voice isn’t in my head. I turn and face him, my cheeks hot.

“Lurking in hallways?” he asks.

“Trying to check on Liam,” I say.

“So that’s why you borrowed my magic,” he says.

“Sorry,” I say.

“Honestly, I’m impressed that you channeled it that far.”
