“A bargain?” he asks. “What are the terms?”

“I stop summoning monsters and you release Liam,” I say. “Don’t keep him in there. Don’t make him shift in front of people.”

His brow furrows. “You know that if he shifts, it could weaken my reputation. By asking this, you not only protect him, but also me.”

“I don’t give a shit about you,” I say.

“Interesting that you care for Liam,” he says. “I had hoped you were fucking him to piss me off. Shame.”

“Ew, no,” I say. “I’m not like that. I don’t revenge fuck people. Who does that?”

He grins. “You’re so new here. It’s adorable.”

“Don’t call me adorable,” I say.

He takes a step closer to me and I hold my ground. Even when he reaches out toward me, I force myself to stay still. I don’t want to show fear. I can’t give him that satisfaction.

He brushes his fingers across my cheek before dropping his hand. “It’s a shame he got you first. But I’ll let you both have your fun. A deal’s a deal. You summon no more monsters. You keep yourself out of harm’s way. And I’ll let him leave the hospital.”

“Wait, keep myself out of harm’s way? That’s not what I said,” I say.

Something warps around my neck and for a second, my breathing is restricted, then it loosens. I reach around my neck and feel a chain. Brow furrowed, I look down to see a silver necklace with a small purple gem hanging from it. “What is this?”

“It’s a protection charm,” he says. “You’re welcome. No more harm to you in exchange for Liam’s freedom.”

This has to be bad for me. I need to use magic to earn points for the ranks. If I’m not able to put myself in harm’s way, how do I do that? Everything in this school revolves around danger. “I have to be able to practice magic.”

“This is the deal,” he says. “Take it or leave it.”

“Fine,” I say. The word tastes bitter on my tongue. I know I’m giving up more than I should but he’s giving me no other choice. I have to get Liam out.

“Enjoy your last few months,” he says as the smoke rises again.

I wave it away with my hand, coughing on the fumes.

A minute later, the smoke clears, leaving the hallway as it always was. As if I imagined the whole thing.

I reach down and feel the necklace around my neck and I know it wasn’t in my head. On instinct, I feel for a clasp and try to remove it. Of course it doesn’t open. I tug on it, trying to break the chain.

It holds tight.

This thing isn’t coming off my neck.

What did I do?
