“Okay.” I really don’t have a care where it goes. I just want to get through the class and get back to my room. The drop in rank hit me a lot harder than I expected and all I want to do is curl up in my bed and shut out the world for a little while.

Instead, I’m digging in the soft earth to plant a pink tree. Things in my life are weird.

Corbin doesn’t say a word as the two of us pass the spade between each other to dig our holes. Finally, my tree is placed and I carefully scoop dirt around it to fill the hole.

I look up to see if Corbin is done and standing behind him is the biggest wolf I’ve ever seen. It’s silver fur shines in the moonlight.

The creature’s face is the same height as mine, even though it’s on all fours.

“Corbin, slowly walk forward toward me. Don’t turn around,” I say, keeping my eyes on the creature.

Corbin’s brow furrows but he sets down the pot he was holding and walks toward me. When he reaches me, he turns to look behind him.

“Oh, shit, Harper, back away slowly,” he says.

I nod. “Yep. Good plan.”

We both start to back away and the creature growls, revealing long, sharp canines.

My heart races as I maintain eye contact with the monster. I can’t remember if it’s worse to keep eye contact or look away.

We’re still moving slowly backward when the wolf takes off, charging toward us.

Corbin jumps in front of me, knocking me to the ground.

I push myself up from the dirt. “Get back.”

“Run, Harper,” he says.

“No, you run,” I say as I jump in front of Corbin.

The wolf stops and growls at me again.

I growl back and take a step closer to it. “Back the fuck off.”

“Harper, what are you doing? You can’t mess with that thing.”

“It can’t hurt me,” I say. “Remember? Stupid necklace.”

I walk closer to it. The beast backs up again. It’s unwilling to fight me. If I really wanted points, I could use my magic on it anyway. But I can’t. It’s not a threat to me.

“Harper,” Corbin says. “Back away.”

“Not till you’re out of here,” I say. “Go back to the class. I’m right behind you.”

“No way,” he says.

“Now is not the time for this,” I say. “Please, trust me.”

He’s quiet for a moment but I don’t look back. I can still feel him there behind me.

“Please, Corbin. Let me do this.”

“Be careful,” he says.

I hear his footsteps as he retreats. The wolf’s eyes shift away from me and its ears twitch. It’s thinking about going after Corbin.

I move so I’m in view and it snaps its head back to me. “That’s what I thought.”
