It growls again.

“We can keep doing this all day, but you’re not going to win.” I hold up the necklace. “You can’t touch me. Even if I might want you to.”

The beast looks past me again, then returns its gaze to me. Then it sits down.

Its whole manner changes. Instead of being on edge, ready to attack, it’s suddenly as relaxed as a house dog.

Surprised by the sudden change, I walk toward the creature and extend a hand. It’s possible it’ll try to bite it off, but something tells me even without the necklace, I’d be safe.

The wolf whimpers and leans its head toward my hand. I feel the coarse fur and a strange sensation rushes into me. A familiar feeling that makes me gasp.

I move so I can look at the wolf’s face more clearly. The eyes aren’t the same as they are in his human form, but there’s no mistaking that this wolf isn’t a wolf at all. “Liam?”

He licks my cheek and I wrinkle my nose. The wolf tongue is rough and very wet. “That’s gross.”

The wolf, Liam, shakes his head as if he disagrees with me. I laugh. I have no idea what he’ll remember. He once told me he has no control over his wolf. But even in his wolf form, he knows who I am.

“Go run,” I say. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

The wolf remains sitting, as if waiting for me to do something. I pat the side of his head and smile. Then I turn and walk away knowing it wasn’t the necklace that kept me safe, but Liam’s wolf. Even in his other form, he can sense our bond.
