“I’m guessing you have a plan, then?” I say. “A way to get out of this bargain?”

She purses her lips and continues to stare at me, unblinking.

“Oh, I get it,” I say. “The professor. He promised you something, right? That’s why you two…”

“I don’t fuck people for favors,” she says. “So whatever you think you know is wrong.”

“Fine,” I say. “But if there’s one thing I do know, it’s that my dad is used to getting his way. Whatever your plan is, it better be good. And it better not rely on beating me for that pass.”

“Why do you care about the pass anyway? When we first talked about it, you didn’t seem to mind. You said you’d wait. Then a few weeks later you had to have it. I don’t get it. You can win the pass next semester. What do you have to lose?” she asks.

“You’re right,” I say. “I don’t have to win the pass. But it’s expected of me to win. And if I don’t win, people will talk. And as you know, the last thing I need is any kind of gossip about me.”

“So go with the lazy playboy routine,” she says. “It was working so well for you before. Why be the good student now?”

I start walking. “It doesn’t matter. Just know I can’t let you win again.”

She catches up to me and falls into step next to me. “I’m going to beat you. You should know that.”

“Thanks for the warning,” I say.

“I mean it,” she says.

“Alright,” I say. “But the real question is what we do if we find that reset spell? Do we keep things the way they are or do we make everyone start from scratch?”

“Keep it,” she says, as if she’s never been more sure of anything in her life.

“We better find it then,” I say. “I’m guessing you’re the only one who wants to do that.”
