I hate that I’m paired with Liam again. After I blackmailed him, he was furious with me. After we both lost, he seemed to go back to his old asshole taunting ways.

It was enough to give me whiplash.

Either way, though, I didn’t want to spend more time than I had to with him. Seemed he had other ideas. Considering I still don’t know who left the bloody message in my room, spending time with him might make things worse for me.

Keeping my rank where it was is a risk, but every time I think of resetting everything the dark king flashes into my memory. He was so certain I’d lose in that dream.

And Sadie is right, the only shot I have is to get my rank high enough that I can skip the final exam and still win. I have no choice but to keep my rank there and defend it.

“Is there a way we can sniff out the spell? Like follow its scent or something? Does it have any telltale signs we can follow?” I ask.

He stops walking and looks at me with a raised eyebrow. “Sniff it out? Like a dog?”

My face heats. That wasn’t exactly what I was thinking but now I realize it came across badly considering his mixed blood. I don’t even know what kind of shifter he is or if he can shift. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Right,” he says, then keeps walking.

“You gotta help me with this,” I say. “I have to find it.”

“Maybe I don’t want you to find it,” he says.

“You don’t want to drop in rank either,” I say.

He grabs my arm and pulls me into an open classroom door then closes the door behind us.

I glance around. The room is empty and only lit by the faint light coming in through the closed blinds. Rows of empty desks face a teacher’s desk and a chalkboard.

Classrooms are creepy when they’re empty.

I turn to Liam and glare at him. “What was that all about?”

“Get it out of your system,” he says. “Go ahead.”

“Get what out?” I ask.

“Wolf,” he says. “I’m part wolf. And yes, I can shift. It’s uncomfortable and I don’t have the control I should. It’s difficult for me to shift back when I make the change so I avoid doing it unless I’m forced to.”

I swallow and stare at him, speechless. Why is he telling me this?

“What else?” he demands. “This is your only chance.”

My mouth feels dry as I meet his gaze. I lick my lips and consider my words carefully. “Why do you go along with it?”

“Go along with being a prince?” he asks. “Aside from the fact that my father would kill me himself if I let his plan slip, why wouldn’t I want to be a prince?”

“Because you can’t be who you really are,” I say. There’s something about him that I can’t place. Something deeper than the asshole he tries to be. Or maybe that’s me making excuses for the fact that standing here alone with him is making me want to reach out and touch his lips and run my fingers through his hair.

I won’t. I’ve had my share of assholes. Yet, I want him.

Fuck.

“You don’t know anything about the power my father has,” he says. “I hope you never do.”

My chest feels tight. I’ve got an idea of what his father can accomplish but he’s right, I don’t want to know more.
