“Right to the point?” he asked with a grin.

“You said you wanted to see me, so here I am.”

He stepped closer to me, closing the distance between us quickly. He stopped inches from me. I held my ground, unwilling to show that I was intimidated.

This close, I caught the scent of sandalwood and cinnamon. It was surprising but masculine. I held my breath, swallowing back against unwanted arousal. I knew it was the incubus in him. It wasn’t real. It was his magic. It felt like a warm caress, calming and enticing all at once.

“Shall we take this somewhere more private?” he asked.

My brow furrowed. “What do you mean? We’re alone, aren’t we?”

He reached behind me, his arm brushing against my waist. I felt the door bump into my back and I realized he wanted to leave the mortuary. My heart raced and panic set it. That wasn’t part of the plan.

“I think we’re fine where we are,” I said.

David slipped his free arm around my waist and pulled me closer to him. I stumbled and gasped, surprised by the movement. That’s when I realized the door wasn’t showing me the outside anymore. It glowed pink and I saw a familiar living room.

I was already through the door and in the living room of the safe house apartment before I fully processed what was happening.

David slammed the door closed and I raced forward, grabbing the handle and tugging it open. It didn’t budge.

Internally, I was kicking myself. How many times was I going to let him get me alone?

I turned around and faced him, my hands on my hips. “This wasn’t part of the agreement.”

“I never specified anything about where we’d meet after the mortuary. If anyone violated the agreement, it was you, when you brought your sidekicks along.” He walked away from the door into the middle of the living room.

When we’d been blocked from re-entering the safe house by vampires, I thought I’d never be back here again. At least I’d be able to grab my knife.

The thought made me straighten as a rush of adrenaline flowed through me. He didn’t have any weapons that I could see. I could still turn this around.

Quickly, I darted into the bedroom and grabbed my knife. When I turned around to leave, David was standing in the doorway.

I glared at him as I tightened my grip around my knife.

He clicked his tongue. “This was supposed to be a friendly meeting. No need for weapons.”

Raising my knife, I took a step forward. “No more tricks. No incubus magic. This time, we do things my way.”

He took a step closer to me, but I held my ground.

“I’ve told you before, the only magic I’ve ever used on you was to hold you in place. I’ve never manipulated your feelings or emotions. Though, I could if that’s what you’re into.” He winked.

“This isn’t a game,” I said. “The only reason I’m here is because we need your help.”

“I have an idea,” he said. “Give me the stone and I’ll take care of it for you. I’ve told you that before. Let me deal with this. It’s beyond your skills.”

I bared my teeth at him and to my surprise, a little growl came from me.

He lifted a brow. “Kitty’s got claws.”

“Stop with the pet names,” I said. “Either you’re going to help us, or you’re not.”

He shrugged, then moved to the side, sweeping an arm toward the door. “Go ahead, leave. You’ll never figure out how to destroy that stone without me.”

Deep down, I knew he was telling the truth. We were at an impasse with that stone and now that I was set on seeing it destroyed, I wanted to see that through. On a completely selfish note, I didn’t want to spend my life running. On a larger scale, I didn’t want to see it used by the wrong people.

I lowered the knife. “I’m not giving it to you.”
