My heart fell to my stomach.Blood.I knew who this was. “Oh, shit.”

She laughed. “You know who I am, then. That’ll speed things up, I suppose.”

“The stone isn’t here,” David said. “And this female is under my protection. She’s my true mate.”

Marcella cocked her head to the side as if the concept was foreign or was too much to process. Then she straightened her head and turned to me. “Is this true?”

“Yes. All of it. We don’t have the stone and frankly, you’re rather rude barging in on our alone time.” At this point, I was over playing it safe. I knew her reputation. If she wanted me dead, she’d have already chewed through me. I could try to fight her, but she was over a thousand years old. She might look like she’d rather be getting ready for her Senior Prom, but she was the most vicious killer I’d ever met.

Marcella laughed. As in threw her head back, full on laughed till her stomach shook. If she could cry, there would have been tears.

I moved closer to David, hoping he still had that knife. I wasn’t even in my boots yet. I was in a borrowed pair of army green itchy socks that were several sizes too big.

Marcella stopped laughing abruptly and then slid across the ground toward us so quickly it looked like she was on wheels. Fucking vampires. They had some crazy tricks. And the older they were, the more they could do.

Apparently they could even burst open doors. Elias had done that, too. Maybe it was a standard supernatural thing and I needed to up my game.

“Where is it?” She was facing David, her hands on her hips.

“I told you, it’s not here.”

“I got rid of it,” I said. “I didn’t want the burden anymore.”

“Excellent. Now tell me where it is and I’ll leave. You can go on your merry way and fuck your demons to your heart’s content.”

I winced when I caught the plural. Until then, I wasn’t sure if she knew I was withbothbrothers. “I sold it to a pawn shop. How am I supposed to know where it is now?”

“Don’t lie to me,” she said.

“Get away from her.” A voice came from behind me.

I turned to see both Elias and Xander walking through the doorway. My heart raced at the sight of them. Xander was naked aside from a jacket tied around his waist. It was covering his goods, but it meant his ass was on full display. There wasn’t time to question the oddness of that right now. I was just grateful for the help.

There were four of us now, which increased our odds.Fuck, Skylar. You can’t be thinking like that.Sure, I was all about the self-defense, but we were talking about the vampire queen here. If we took her out, we wouldn’t last long with all the other royals coming after us.

“Welcome to the party, boys,” Marcella said. “I assume one of you is the pawn shop?”

“They don’t have it,” I said. “I told you, I got rid of it.”

Marcella reached into her skirts and I tensed. Was she going to pull a weapon on us? What weapon exactly did a vampire queen keep in her crazy elaborate skirt? AnddamnI was really impressed that she had pockets.

She pulled her hand out from the fabric folds and held up a smart phone, lifting the screen toward us each in turn.

My brow furrowed. That was not what I was expecting. “What’s with the phone?”

“It’s more about who is on the other side of the phone,” she said.

I narrowed my eyes, struggling to make out the video feed on her phone. There was a figure inside what looked like a small room, but it was hard to tell the details.

David and Elias both walked closer. Xander moved over to me. “You okay? She didn’t hurt you, did she?”

“No, I’m okay,” I said. “What happened to your clothes?”

“I had to shift,” he said.

I forgot about that part of shifting. For a moment, I wondered if what Fern had said was accurate. Xander and I had completed our bond. Did that mean I’d be able to shift now too?

“What about the demon?” Xander growled. “Want me to kill him for you?”
