“No, we worked things out.” I didn’t get to see Xander’s reaction, though because I was glued to what was playing out in front of me.

Elias and David were peering at the phone and I could feel their emotions growing. Everything was a dark tangle, as I had felt with Elias in the past. But this time, David was in the mix too. There was anger and fear mixed with hope and wonder. The emotions shifted and warped, changing from one to the other, mixing and crashing together.

“What is it?” I asked.

“You see her there, don’t you?” Marcella asked.

“What do you want?” Elias asked with more malice than I thought possible in a single sentence.

“You will return her to us,” David growled.

“It’s Clara,” I whispered.

Xander looked down at me. “Their sister?”

I nodded.

“She is alive?” Xander asked.

“She’ll stay alive if I get that stone,” Marcella said.

“Give us a few days,” I said. “I’m sure I can track it down for you.”

Marcella was in front of me so quickly I didn’t even see her move. “Enough lies, girl.”

She grabbed me and spun me around so I was facing Xander. I felt the cold steel of a blade against my neck.

“Two for one.” Marcella pressed the blade and I felt the bite of the steel cutting into my throat. I gasped.

“You give me the stone and I spare not only your sister’s life, but the life of your mate as well.” She lowered her head and I felt the flick of her tongue on my injured neck.

“Don’t even think about it, bitch,” I said. “I’m nobody’s meal.”

“Maybe I won’t kill her, maybe I’ll take her home with me and play with her for a while,” she said.

I elbowed her and she moved her hand just enough that I was able to move forward. I didn’t get far before she had her arms locked around me again. I squirmed, but she pushed the blade to my throat again. I winced as the knife dug into my skin.

“Skylar, stop moving,” Xander said.

“Lola died for that stone,” I said. “It’s a curse.”

“I know,” he said.

“Marcella, let her go. You are violating so many treaties right now,” Elias said.

“And what are you going to do? Go home and cry to your father? Will they even let you return, fallen prince?” she said.

“Let Skylar go and we’ll get you the stone,” David said. “That’s what I’m here for, right? I came to you and asked for help. I owe you the stone for the information. I’m good for my word.”

“Your word became void when you formed a mating bond with one who wants the stone for herself. I know how it works. The bond is stronger than anything else,” Marcella said.

Elias looked at David, his brows raised, but he didn’t comment.

“Just let me go so we can talk about this,” I said.

Marcella dragged me with her, taking steps closer to my mates. They held their ground. She stopped in front of Xander.

My pulse raced and fear bloomed in my chest. Not from the knife on my throat, but from the necklace around Xander’s. He was wearing the locket. The stone was right there. Too close.
