Heat simmered in my belly and I fought against it. I couldn’t release my fire here and now. Aside from the penalties I’d face for regicide, there was the risk to Xander. I was guessing the demons could handle my fire, but what would it do to him? There had to be another way out of this.

“Let’s talk this over, without weapons,” Xander said.

“That’s rich coming from you, your highness,” Marcella said. “I know how you settle disagreements in your territory. And people say I’m tough on my subjects.”

“Isn’t this nice. It’s like a little royal summit. If it weren’t for the thievery, we might get along just fine,” she said.

“You’re the one who is trying to steal something that doesn’t belong to you,” I spat.

“The stone was mine before his pack took it,” she said. “I never used it. All those years, it sat there protected. Until they took it from me.”

“So why do you care, then? If you’re not using it anyway?” I asked. “We’re going to destroy it. Let this end now.”

The blade tightened and I gasped. I felt the wetness of my blood on my neck. She didn’t care if she hurt me.

“Because I want to use it now. Times have changed. It’s time for the vampires to claim what’s theirs. Last warning, or I will paint the floors with her blood.”

Blackness seeped in at the edges of my vision. My head felt like it was floating away from my body and I could no longer feel the sting of the blade.

“The stone. Now.”

I couldn’t make out my mates clearly anymore. Everything was a blur. Xander moved closer to us, then David and Elias were next to me.

I felt like I was falling and then I was vaguely aware of someone’s hand on my neck.

Then everything went black.
