I leaned down, touching my head to his as my eyes fluttered closed. “I can’t trust you anymore.” I breathed the words, suppressing a shudder.

“You can.” His hand curved around my neck, holding me as he wiped my tears away with his thumb. “I don’t want to be that guy anymore. Angry, bitter… cold. You showed me another way, Peyton. You did that. I know I saved you that night, but you saved me too.”

Xander’s words caressed my face, and I inhaled a shuddering breath as I blinked away the tears still falling. He’d said the same thing in his letter.

“Give me another chance, please?”

Tension crackled around us as I felt my resolve slipping. He was offering me everything I wanted.

His mouth ghosted over mine, touching but not touching. “I need you,” he repeated. “I need you.”

“Say it.” I cupped his face in my hands, staring him dead in the eye. “I need to hear you say it.”

“I love you, Peyton Myers. I love your smile and sass and strength. But most of all, I love your soul. How could I not when it’s the other half to mine?”

I expelled a shaky breath, my heart fluttering wildly in my chest. My arms wound around his neck, crushing him to me as our lips came together in an uncertain kiss, both of us scared the other might disappear.

“Don’t ever break my heart again,” I whispered.

Xander searched my eyes and he smiled at whatever he saw there. “I won’t, I promise,” he said, kissing me. Claiming me with his lips, branding me with his tongue, and piecing me back together with every shared breath.

“It’s you and me, Peyton.” He broke the kiss, nothing but love and promises for the future shining in his eyes. “You and me against the world.”
