I can handle this, right?

The box shifted on the ground, a hissing coming from it.

Everyone froze, and even those who had their eyes closed opened them. Flames poured from the box, but the flames weren’t red. They were black.

Hunter cursed and grabbed me, wrapping his body around mine as though he could shield me from whatever was happening.

It seemed pretty rude for Lucifer to summon me and immediately kill me, but that was a complaint I could formally lodge later.

Especially because I’ll be dead…

The flames spread through the room, but they didn’t seem to catch anything on fire. Troy, Grant and Kase cried out, pained sounds that I was sure would keep me up at night.

Some licked across my leg, my arm, the few places where Hunter didn’t fully surround me.

As quick as it happened, though, it stopped.Silence.

I shoved at Hunter, who uncurled from me. Grant, Troy and Kase all appeared unharmed, all on their feet as if they hadn’t been lounging about moments earlier. I guess that sprang them all into action.

We weren’t in the room anymore. In fact, we weren’t inside at all. Trees surrounded us, everything dim as if lit by a moon that wasn’t in the sky. A breeze carried the scent of brimstone on it, and something hungry and angry andlargehowled in the distance.

Smoke thick enough it could be caught in a person’s hands cover the ground.

“Where are we?” I asked even though I had a sinking feeling I already knew.

Hunter crossed his arms, staring out toward where the sound had come from. “It looks like Lucifer wasn’t willing to wait around and see if you’d show up. Welcome to hell, shadow-girl.”
