‘And I want to thank you for telling us your story,’ Baron continued.

As Sophia had recounted what had happened — including the details of her childhood betrothal to Whip — he’d acted like the former Sergeant-at-arms he was. His questions had been reassuring but sharp, probing into the details of the arrangement. He’d been very interested to hear about her father’s organization in particular.

‘I hope it’s helpful,’ she said.

‘Well, if nothing else, we know Whip’s real name. And frankly, I can see why he doesn’t go by it.’ Baron smile. ‘Hank Groat. It’s about the scrawniest name I ever heard.’

‘Was that the reason you didn’t want to marry him?’ Molly piped up, eyes shining. ‘You didn’t want to be Mrs. Groat?’

‘It definitely crossed my mind,’ Sophia managed.

‘Molly,’ Baron said, ‘why don’t you go play with Sophia for a while?’

Wolf’s heart pounded. He hadn’t spoken to Sophia about the fact that Molly was a Little. He hadn’t really spoken to her about the fact he was a Daddy Dom.

‘I’d love to play,’ Molly said.

‘What kind of play?’ Sophia asked. She didn’t seem to be completely repulsed at the idea of playing with another fully-grown woman, so that was a good start.

She’s a stuffie repairer. She likes to play. She’s innocent and naturally submissive. She’s my god damn dream woman.

‘You can choose. I’ve got atonof toys and games to choose from.’

Sophia, for the first time since the business with Whip, looked just a tiny bit more relaxed.

The two girls left the room and Baron looked serious. ‘This is bad. Seems like the Death Division have ties with the Mob. Maybe those ties are historic, but now that Whip knows Sophia is here, in New York, he’s got a chance to renew those links. No doubt he’s already been in touch with her father to arrange some kind of deal.’

‘I figured as much,’ Wolf said. ‘We should call a club meeting.’

‘Agreed. In the meantime, we need to start a security detail around the Den.’

Wolf was glad to hear that. It meant that Baron didn’t want to abandon their territory. They’d left it for so long. There was no way he wanted to get bullied out of New York again.

‘Good that we’re on the same page.’

‘Course,’ Baron nodded. ‘We’re brothers. We might fight sometimes, but when push comes to shove, we share the same blood. Now we have to talk about something even more serious.’

‘What could be more serious than this?’

‘Your relationship with Sophia.’

Wolf nodded. Fuck. Baron was right.

Sophia felt sweat bead her brow. Her fingers trembled; her body felt as though she was about to pass out.

‘This is impossible,’ she said, surveying the task ahead of her.

‘You can do it,’ Molly said. ‘I believe in you.’

Sophia rubbed her palms together, trying to work out the pins and needles in her fingers. Then, she reached toward the stack of wooden blocks and gripped the edge of the one she’d selected.

She hadn’t played Jenga since she was a kid. Her brother, Vinnie, was an expert player, and Sophia didn’t have much patience, so she’d always just decided on a block to remove without really thinking much about its position.

Oh, Vinnie. What had Hank meant when he said that thing? ‘Shame about your brother’? She wished she could see her mom and her brother. But she couldn’t risk it. Not after everything that had happened.

Thinking about it all was too painful right now. She felt traumatized and exhausted. Better to focus on playing this game. A game that maybe today she could find a way to win.
