Sophia sat down on the bed and laid her hands in her lap. ‘Of course,’ she said.

‘Good. Look, I might be wrong, but it feels like there’s… something between us.’

As soon as the sentence had left his lips, Sophia felt the energy in the room somehow change. It was as though he’d turned on a bare bulb, and it was crackling with energy.

‘Something?’

‘Something,’ he echoed. ‘Thing is, right now, I don’t think you need a boyfriend. It feels like you need a lot more than that.’

Boyfriend? Was he asking her out? Or breaking up with her before they could even get to that stage?

‘Okay.’ It was about the only thing she could manage to say.

‘This might seem a bit… full on,’ Wolf continued, ‘but I feel connected to you. Ever since I found you living in the Den, it’s felt like I’m responsible for you.’

‘I’m sorry,’ said Sophia. ‘You don’t have to—’

‘Let me finish, babygirl.’ Wolf paused, then began to pace the room. ‘It was as much of a surprise to me as it probably was to you that I didn’t just kick you out. Still can’t quite get my head around it.’ He scratched his head.

‘Lucky for me you didn’t.’

‘Was it? If I’d kicked you out, Whip wouldn’t have found you. You could have been getting on with your life. Maybe that’s why I feel like I want to — no, why I’vegotto protect you.’

‘Protect me?’

‘I’m going to keep you safe until Whip is out of the equation.’

Her heart raced. ‘You mean you’re going to kill him?’

‘That’s not for you to worry about,’ he said. ‘That’s club business. I don’t want you unduly worrying — we’re not animals. We try to minimize bloodshed wherever we can. But the people in the Death Division, and the people in your father’s organization by the sounds of it, are dangerous.’

‘What about after he’s out of the picture?’ The thought of being kicked out of Wolf’s life — no matter how far in the future that might be — was uncomfortable to her.

‘Then you’re free to live how you like. Which ain’t to say you’re trapped now. Far from it. I’m not gonna keep you against your will. If you decide you don’t want to be around me, you just let me know.’

Without realizing she was doing anything, Sophia gripped the bed’s blanket. It was hard for her to be apart from her stuffies — she needed something to comfort her. As that thought dawned on her, she imagined cuddling up to Wolf. He would be the ultimate comforter.

‘So, what do you say?’

To her surprise, she didn’t even have to think about it at all. ‘I want it,’ she said. ‘I want you to look after me.’

Even as she said the words, she hoped she was doing the right thing. It had been so long since she’d allowed herself to fully trust anyone. She hoped she could trust him. Because she couldn’t handle any more losses. She’d had enough losses to last her a lifetime.

Everything felt so natural with her. So right.

He’d stood with Sophia in the bathroom as she’d scrubbed her teeth with a travel toothbrush, reminding her to go to all the corners of her mouth. He’d helped her turn the squeaky taps of the bath, and tested the temperature of the water before leaving her to get washed. He’d dried her hair, gently massaging her scalp with a scratchy towel, all the while talking to her about her past, about everything she’d been through.

‘I guess Molly told you I’m a Daddy Dom,’ he said softly as she slipped into bed. Molly had given her a pair of Wonder Woman pajamas for the night. There was nothing sexier, in Wolf’s opinion, than bedtime. Seeing a woman in such an intimate, private moment made his soul growl with a desire that was so much more than just sexual.

‘Yeah,’ Sophia said, her gray eyes widening a little as she waited for him to continue.

‘You know what that means, right?’

‘In general,’ she replied. ‘Though I know everyone’s concept of what a Daddy Dom is varies.’

‘Sure. It’s a broad term. A spectrum, I guess.’
