Addison finishes her water and puts down her glass. She’s wearing a thoughtful expression. ‘So, are you saying that because of that marriage being so disastrous, you thought you might as well get married again, this time for more noble reasons?’

‘Sounds pretty messed up… but yeah. That’s one of the reasons I agreed to do it.’

‘And what are they other reasons, Finn? You need to tell me everything.’

‘I want to,’ I say, taking her hand. ‘I want to tell you it all. I just need a little time, okay? Can we at least get this drugged-up asshole out of our cabin first?’

She laughs. ‘Yes. Okay. We can at least do that.’

Just then, Eric starts barking. He’s standing by the door, scratching at the wood. There’s something out there.

I turn around, looking out the window, and I immediately zero in on two pairs of hands, each sporting the number four in Roman numerals.

ADDISON

‘Finn, be careful!’ I shout.

But he’s already stepped out the door.

I stand at the window, keeping an eye on Chris at the same time. At least Finn has locked away his gun, so if he does wake up, he’s without a weapon.

On the other hand, Finn locked awayhis ownweapon too.

This is terrifying. I’ve never been in a situation like this before and I don’t know what to do.

I just hope Daddy can save us.

There are two guys out there, just a little way behind the Chevy. They’re big guys. As wide as they are tall. One of the guys has red hair and the other has a scar running down his face. I feel like I justknowthat this is the same guy that turned up at Sadie’s door in New York the other night. Poor Sadie. She must have been terrified.

‘Get down, Dee,’ calls Finn, motioning toward the window.

I crouch a little, but I can’t bear not to watch at all. I need to see what happens. I need to see that Finn is okay.

The men move out from behind the Chevy now, and I see that they’re carrying guns — just when I thought I’d reached my gun quota for the day. These guns make every other gun we’ve seen today look like kids’ water pistols. They’re automatics.

Holy shit.

Is there anything I can do? Would it help to get our guns out of the cabinet? I doubt it. I bite my lip, trying to control my breathing, trying to think.

‘Finn Wilder,’ says the guy with the scar. ‘We need you to come with us.’ His voice is cold — callous.

‘Come with you where?’ calls Finn. He’s standing with his hands on his hips, his legs wide — a powerful pose, even though he’s completely unarmed.

‘Did we say you could speak?’ says the guy with the red hair in a thick, deep, rasping voice.

‘Did I say you could trespass on my property?’ Oh my god, Daddy is brave. Brave, and a little stupid, maybe…

‘You want me to blow your head off?’ asks Scar Face.

‘You want to see what happens if you try?’ asks Finn. ‘Don’t you think I’ve got every inch of this land booby-trapped, just in case of visitors like you?

Wow, I know I shouldn’t be thinking this, but it’s just so freaking hot seeing him stand up to these guys. If we make it out of this alive, I’m going to jump his bones.

Scar Face obviously decides to change tack with Finn. He can see that he’s not going to bully him as easily as he thought. ‘That old woman, Georgie Brown, the one who owns the land here: she trusts you. We know that she’s considering selling off her land. It’s obviously got too much for her. We want her to sell the land to us. You’re going to convince her to do that for us. But to give it to us for free.’

‘Why would she do that for me? Even if she trusts me, it’s not like I can just wave a magic wand.’
