‘You’re going to tell her we’re ex-military friends of yours. That you trust us to protect her land, keep the trees, or whatever fucking sissy shit she’s worried about.’

This plan is insane. There’s no way Georgie would agree to hand her land over, much as she adores Finn. Still, Finn is playing along.

‘What’s in it for me?’ Finn asks. ‘Why should I help you?’

Red Head looks at Finn and grins like a maniac. ‘We don’t kill you. Or your little freak of a wife in there. Don’t want her to wet her littlediaper, do we, Daddy? How does that sound?’

Scar Face grins now too. ‘Oh, by the way, we hope you got that little present we left in your cabin the other day. The pussycat head.’

What the hell? I thought that trophy hunter left that head. Jesus, these guys are freaking horrible. Horrible and dumb. If they knew anything about Finn Wilder, they’d know that he’s not a man who’s easily intimidated.

‘Look,’ says Finn, ‘I’m not having my wife put in any danger. She’s too damn precious to me. I’ll go along with your plan…’

What the fuck? Honestly, Finn?

‘We just need to hash out the details, okay? Why don’t you come up here, onto the veranda, and we’ll talk about it like human beings?’

‘Yeah, right,’ says Scar Face. ‘Nice trick, but we weren’t born yesterday, cocksucker.’

‘Alright,’ says Finn. ‘I’ll come out to you. Just watch out for that bear trap on the ground there, okay?’

They’re so pleased with themselves for not falling for Finn’s previous trick that they’re completely vulnerable to this one. Before they’ve had a chance to register that they’ve just been dupedagain, they glance downward, and Finn reaches into his pocket and pulls out yet another gun.

It’s one I’d completely forgotten about. Something he carries with him wherever he goes in the forest: a tranquilizer gun.

In a flash, Finn has shot them both, and they fall onto the forest floor, like dead wood.

‘Oh my god!’ I cry out, running toward the door. ‘Finn! Are you okay?’

Finn comes into the cabin, rubbing his head. ‘Dammit, darlin’, I thought I was a goner for a moment.’

‘You didn’t show it,’ I say. ‘You were so brave. And so sexy.’

Finn looks at me, his blue eyes clearer and more incredible than I’ve ever seen them. ‘I’ve a mind to take you in my arms right now, and get started on Round Two,’ he says. ‘But first, I’d better call Sheriff Potts. Get all these assholes off our property.’

I smile. ‘Is Chris still out?’

Finn looks behind me. ‘He’s stirring. He’ll be awake soon. Why don’t you go take a walk, sweetheart? I’ll clear up this… mess. You’ll be safe out there now. And by the time you get back, it’ll all be like none of this ever happened.’

He puts his arms around my waist, and kisses me, long and hard, on the lips. ‘But, Daddy,’ I say, pulling away. ‘Itdidhappen. And I’m glad it did. If it hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t be where we are now. And I like it here.’

Finn kisses me again, even harder this time. ‘Now, go, sweetie,’ he growls, ‘before I forget myself.’ He slaps me on the ass, a swift and powerful movement that sends waves of pleasure all over my groin, and then walks over to the telephone.

I look down at Chris, lying there on the floor, shivering and moaning, and I think that in spite of all this nonsense, I really do forgive him. Why get worked up about him anymore? He’s part of my history.

I’m ready to start thinking about my future.

I leave the cabin, looking at the guys out cold on the ground, dozing like big, ugly babies. It feels incredible to think that just a week ago all I had to worry about was my ruined fashion business and my sister leaving the country. The stuff I’ve been dealing with in the last few days — it’s been a matter of life and death. And it’s not until you’re tested to your limits like this that you realize how strong you really are.

I walk up the hill toward the watchtower, hoping that Finn can handle everything back at the cabin okay. I know that he’s more than capable, though. Taking on three guys with guns today — he’s got more guts than all of them put together. He really is at home in this wilderness, the master of his domain. Truly dominant.

I’m desperate to show him how impressed I was back there. Those words he said are still ringing in my ears.

I’m not having my wife put in any danger. She’s too damn precious to me.

Ohhhh man, it’s such a turn-on.

To take my mind off the heat spreading between my legs, I check my phone for reception. Good. I’m far enough up the hill to have some now. I open up my inbox and look back over that email from my sister. I write a quick reply thanking her for the money, but telling her that the threat has been neutralized. She doesn’t need to come home just yet. She should keep following her dreams. Because that’s what I’m about to do.
