Page 35 of Always Her Mate

“How did you get in here?”

So help me, if he’s been working with Trish after all and me and Ryker fell for her sob story the other day—

“Everyone thinks that shifters and vampires are mortal enemies. And maybe we are. Luna knows these parasites make me sick, but they have their uses. But let’s not waste time with that. I have to be heading back to the Wolf District to make my report to the Alpha, but I couldn’t wait any longer.”

“For what?”

“Did you like my gift?”

I narrow my gaze at him. On the one hand, I want to know more about the vampire helping him. On the other, the change of subject is so abrupt, he has me on guard.

“What gift?”

“Don’t tell me that you didn’t receive my envelope?” Shane tuts. “Never trust a human with a simple delivery. I knew I should’ve just dropped it off at your blood bar myself.”

“Yougave me the ruby?”

“A male can’t court his mate without a gift.”

Ugh. Pardon me while I gag.

If that’s what he was trying to do, he can have that sucker back. My hand slaps at the front of my thigh, searching for the ruby in my pocket. Crap. These aren’t my jeans. I ran outside in my pj’s. The ruby is back at the apartment.

Still, I say, “You want it? I’ll go get it for you right now.”

“Nah. It’s yours. I want you to keep it.”

That settles it. It goes in the trash the first chance I get.

“Don’t do me any favors, Shane. Besides, I already know who my mate is.” Reaching under my shirt, I yank out the chain that Ryker gave me. “Newsflash, asshole. It’s not you. It’ll never be you. So, unless you want me to dig my claws in your gut and see what you ate for dinner, you’ll back the fuck off. Muncie is my territory. You’re not welcome.”

It doesn’t matter that I’m a chick. The level of my dominance compared to a beta’s is off the charts. Knowing that I mean every word of my threat, Shane should be backing down.

But he isn’t. And when he reaches beneath his own shirt, pulling out a necklace that is eerily similar to mine, I know exactly why he’s so damn confident—and why he’s walking around the Fang City like he’s untouchable.

Because that? That’s a vampire fang. Wearing one of those means that he’s under the protection of one of the fanged supes.

In Muncie, that means heisuntouchable.

“Where did you get that?” I demand.

He couldn’t just steal it. It’s part of the magic. If a vampire presented you with a fang, it stayed on the chain. If you wear one meant for someone else, the fang crumbles to ash within seconds of being outside of a vampire’s mouth.

No. Someone gave him that.

Hey. Maybe, if I’m lucky, he unwittingly accepted some vamp’s proposition to make Shane their mate. Then he could give up on his insane plan to take me ashisso that I can help him become an alpha.

“Stefan. For the right price, he was willing to help me sneak in right under the useless patrol’s nose. And with a little help from my new Alpha and his latest pet, I covered my scent so that you wouldn’t know I was here until I wanted you to. By the way, you look cute with your hair braided. I liked it.”

I wore my hair in a messy braid style yesterday morning.

Does he mean to be so freaking creepy? Because the idea that Shane’s been stalking me for real, not like one of the games I treat as foreplay with Ryker… that’s super freaking creepy.

Don’t let him know he’s gotten to you, Gem. He’ll enjoy it, and you’ll be at even more of a disadvantage.

This sucks. My fight with Monroe, that sucks harder. I’m beginning to wonder if that was just shit luck after all. If he could buy this Stefan guy off, how much do I want to bet that Shane sicced Monroe on me the other night? If he’s been watching me as long as he wants me to think—considering the envelope initially made its way to Jimmy Fiorello more than a week and a half ago now—then maybe he found a way to put me at odds with the Cadre.
