Page 55 of Always Her Mate

Ryker’s standing on the porch, arms crossed over his chest as he stares down… one, two, three, yes, four… fourshifter males oozing both protectiveness and devotion.

Ah, crap. Just what I was afraid of.

They’re all in their human forms, but even if they were in their fur, I’d still recognize them.

Jace.

Dorian.

Bobby.

And there, towering over the rest, is the big, brawny, beefy shifter whose name I still don’t know—and, by now, it’s just too awkward to ask—but who I have taken to calling B.G., if only inside my own head.

Each one is purposely avoiding Ryker’s alpha stare, keeping their gazes on the grass on their side of the porch, but as soon as I open the door, their heads swing my way.

It’s… kind of creepy, actually. It’s so perfectly in unison, it’s like they planned it—or they have no control over it.

I swallow a sudden lump in my throat. I’ve seen wolf shifters have a similar reaction like that to the moon. We always seem to know instinctively where the Luna is, and when her pull is at its strongest, our heads will search for her in the night’s sky the same way that these four are now watching me.

Not because we want to, but because itisinstinct.

Uh-oh.

If it were anyone else but these particular four, I might not be thinking what I’m thinking. But it is these four, and the way they seem to be waiting for something from me throws me back to the night of June’s full moon when I used my alpha howl to compel these four shifters to allow me to finish chasing after Shane.

At the time, they were the only things standing between me and my prey. I just wanted them to understand that I was on their side, that Shanewasn’t, and that I needed to get to him before he made it off of pack territory.

Which, of course, he did. But not before I howled at these four, and they joined in the chase. Then, when it was obvious that Shane had a vehicle waiting and he risked driving into Muncie, they listened to me when I ordered them all to return to Accalia.

And now they’re here.

With a smile that I can’t bring myself to mean, I nod at each one, greeting them by name until I get to the last one and I actually call him B.G. out loud.

His brow furrows, obviously confused. “Uh, B.G.?”

“Right.” My smile widens just a little. “B.G.— you know, Big Guy. It’s what I call you in my head since you’re so damn huge. You don’t mind, do you?”

“Um. I guess that’s okay, but my name is—”

I wave him off. That’s not important right now. “What are you guys doing here?”

The four of them exchange a look.

Ryker leans against the porch railing, tapping his foot, waiting for them to speak up.

I can sense a mixture of emotions coming from him. Weirdly enough, though jealousy and possession are some of the major ones, there’s a whisper of humor swirling around him, plus some curiosity.

Yeah. That doesn’t bode well at all.

Ryker looks at the other wolves, then curves his lips in a look so predatory, if I didn’t trust this male to my bones, even I might’ve turned tail and run.

He zeroes in on the big guy. “Why don’t you tell her what you told me, Jack?”

Ugh. My nose wrinkles when the big shifter nods in return.

No wonder why I seemed to repress his name. That, while I could remember nearly every other packmate I met, I always draw a blank when it comes to him.

“Ew. Your name is Jack?”
