Tears rolled down her face, and I whipped them with my thumbs.

“It’s neither your fault nor your responsibility. And he’s not right at all. He’s never visiting. He sees my mother on weddings and funerals. They don’t even talk on the phone. He’s the one who should be feeling guilty.”

The fact that my very-concerned-for-my-safety father hadn’t bothered to call me since he left me at my new temporary home to check on me, was only making me blame him even more.

Not to mention Madison, who lived three thousand miles away when she wasn’t abroad and who talked to Sylvia more than I did. She must have noticed something, right? Why hadn’t she tipped dad about mom? Why was I other people’s responsibility?

Of course, I knew Madison didn’t care enough about me to even text to see for herself that I was alive, let alone call me, but it was still painful to be neglected by every single one of your parents and siblings. Tyler was no good either. They all deserted me with the woman that broke us apart.

“Are we going shopping after school?” Hannah cut my thoughts. “I need the distraction”.

“What’s wrong?” I haven’t even noticed she was feeling down. Now that I had really looked at her, she was actually pretty miserable. And I was a shitty friend.

“I got carried away,” she shook her head. “After the fire, I really hoped Tyler would come see you.”

That sounded like my brother. He managed to hurt her without even showing his face.

“I really hate that you’re into my brother. He’s a dick. You deserve way better”.

“Maybe he just needs to be loved,” Hannah argued his case.

“Or maybe you should face the music. His childhood home burnt. His mother is in rehab. His underaged sister is living with the neighbors. And he’s a no-show.”

Hannah rested her head on my shoulder. A few seconds later she looked at me.

“Speaking of disappointing love stories… When are you going on a date with Dylan?”

“Mm,” I wondered for a moment. “Probably never. Too complicated. Too much history.”

“The history you’re referring to is between you and your new roommate. You and Dylan have a clean slate. And as I probably said once or twice, he is hot.”

I tried to imagine me and Dylan, and I instantly knew I had no desire to go out with him.

“Can we go back to your depressed self, please?” I teased.

“Nope. Your miserable love life distracts me from my own,” she smiled.

“I don’t have a love life,” I protested.

“Exactly,” she winked at me. “We have to change that.”

Deep down I knew this was the most terrible idea Hannah ever had.

“Me dating Dylan while I’m living with Lucas?” I asked her with an are-you-out-of-your-fucking-mind look?

I knew I shouldn’t judge Dylan for what happened. He apologized. And even though he gave me a manipulative asshole vibe four years ago, this was no longer the case. He was actually pretty nice.

But something was shifting between me and Lucas, and it scared me. It was not a good time to start dating anyone. And my mission in the Coles residence was to help him forgive me, not get on his bad side while he obviously had issues with both me and Dylan.

“Lucas fucked the whole town since the shit between you two blew in your faces,” Hannah said.

“Thanks for the reminder,” I frowned.

“Dylan’s not going to fuck you on their dinner table while they’re eating. He’s just going to get your ass out of their house and then bring it back. I think Lucas will live.”

I had a hard time confessing to my best friend about Lucas’s threat. She had a wild imagination and a big mouth. Dangerous combination.

“You’re right. But I’m not into Dylan anyway.”
