“I’m surprised you told me.”

My answer made her uncomfortable, so I bumped my shoulder into hers and unlocked the door. I walked in first and lit a flashlight.

“The power is out.”

I glanced at her. She was looking at the walls and the floors. They were ready.

“Do you want to look around or…?”

I knew she didn’t care about the house, but I wanted to give her a moment if she needed one.

“Or?” she asked.

“Or get with the program?” I grinned at her.

“Get with the program, please,” her voice was a whisper.

I took her upstairs to her room. She walked in, and I stayed in the hallway. The room was completely empty if you didn’t count the bed. I saw it delivered a few days ago. So all I needed to do was bring sheets and a blanket.

“Now I get why we’re here,” she tried to hide her amusement.

“Do you?”

“That’s pretty self-explanatory,” she pointed at her bed.

“I decided I had more chances here than three steps away from my parent’s bedroom.”

She looked at me, head to toe.

“You decided right.”

“Can I come in?” I was still standing in the hallway. “I know you hate people going into your room without asking.”

She laughed and pointed at the made bed again.

“I think you have once again broken that rule.”

“At least I didn’t take anything this time,” I walked in slowly.

“Only because there is nothing to take.”

“True,” I was only a step away from her. “I want to take everything you have to give.”

Silence fell between. She broke it first.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re hunting me down.”

“Actually I was hoping you would put me out of misery and take the last step between us for a change.”

I still needed the reassurance she was choosing me. She erased the space between us without any hesitation and looked up at me.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” she asked. My laughter jumped off the walls and echoed in the empty room. It echoed inside me.

“I think I’m supposed to ask you that, nemesis.”
