When I finally managed to calm myself down enough to get out of there, I tried to call Lucas. He didn’t answer.

I went downstairs, told my mother I was going home. It was almost midnight and she just shrugged, letting me go by myself like she didn’t care. She probably didn’t.

I ran back home crying. I got upstairs to my room and looked through the windows. Lucas’s room was dark. It seemed empty. Maybe he was still at the party. I lost count on the times I tried to call him. Send him dozens of texts. Nothing.

I spent a sleepless night. I was going to talk to him first thing in the morning. I had to explain.

My phone rang around seven o’clock. It was Amy. My heart flipped inside my chest. She knew. I didn’t know how, but I was sure she knew.

I answered the call. She asked to go outside. I did. She was waiting for me.

“I can’t believe you did this to me,” she snarled.

“Amy, I’m so sorry,” I tried to touch her, but she swatted my hand away. “What happened? Did Dylan send out the video? Who else knows?”

“No one. I just grilled Dylan for an hour before he finally came clean and told me what happened.”

“Did he delete the video?” the thought of my mother’s recorded moans was becoming unbearable.

“Yes. You did your part of the deal after all.”

“You know about the kiss?”

“Lucas told Chase. I guess what they say about the apple and the tree is true after all.”

I shook my head violently. But the thought sank even if it made me want to disappear. I was like my mother. She kissed someone and hurt his family. I kissed someone and hurt Lucas.

“I’m sorry,” my tears were falling down my face. “I didn’t know it was your father. I tried to make it right.”

“Please explain to me how you kissing Dylan could possibly make it right?” Amy roared stepping closer to me. “Your whore of a mother was making out with him while we were all there. If Dylan talks, it would be end of our family.” She spat every word in my face. “Make sure your mother stays away from my father.”

“How?”

“I don’t care. If our family breaks apart because of you two, I will make your life a living hell. Don’t tell anyone what happened.”

“I have to tell Lucas. I have to tell him. To explain why I kissed Dylan.”

Amy released a dark chuckle.

“Lucas will never look at you again. Believe me. Chase told me every word Lucas said. It’s over between you two.”

“I can’t lose him. He’s my best friend.”

Amy cocked her head sideways looking at me like I didn’t get the whole picture.

“You just kiss a random guy when it was perfectly clear to everyone that something was happening between you and Lucas. Do you think you will change his mind about you by explaining to him what your mother did? You’re dead to him.”

“Did he say that?” I whispered.

“Yes. He said he never wants to see your face again.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

Clementine

The present

I went to Amy’s place later that Friday evening. I really hoped I wasn’t going to bump into Lucas there. That was the last thing any one of us needed after that scene in school earlier that day.
