“My lord,” she gasped. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me. I just…”
He smiled. “Please don’t apologize. Your embraces are beyond pleasant and—”
“Pleasant?” she asked pulling away a bit.
“Beyond,” he answered, tugging her closer again. He didn’t wish to say too much and frighten her off. He’d just gave her a lecture on how she should find her own future instead of allowing someone else to impose their dreams upon her. But he wanted to allow all sorts of words to tumble from his lips.
Was he ready to declare his undying love?
Perhaps.
That idea should frighten him but somehow, it did not. In fact, it filled him with an excitement that he’d never experienced before.
“Thank you for those comforting words and the advice,” she replied, still worrying her lip. Was it wrong that he wished to massage the flesh where her teeth dug in? “You’ve given me a great deal to think about.”
“And you’ll join me one evening, won’t you? In return, you must teach me about your pursuits as well. I’m fascinated.”
His interest in her hobby made her eyes widen again as she released her lip. “You want to see my collections and classifications?”
“I do.” While he wasn’t certain he cared about insects, he loved to hear her talk about anything. If was only fair, after all he’d shared his hobby with her and she’d been supportive and attentive. Besides, her knowledge and excitement were infectious, and he’d be fascinated to see what she’d learned. Because he knew it was something wonderful. He sighed. She…was wonderful.
“Perhaps this afternoon…” she asked with another blush.
“Tillie Crosby,” he whispered. “Say those words like you know I’ll be enthralled. Because I will. How can I not with you delivering the information?”
Her answering smile glittered in the dappled sun. “This afternoon,” she repeated with all the confidence he’d come to expect, love, from Tillie.
“This afternoon,” he repeated, the words sounding like a promise even to his own ears. What would he promise Tillie to make her his?
That was the question he needed to answer next.
