“I’m not certain. I only know that Lord Smith has recommended that Tillie make the journey to Portishead to aid Juliet.”

Alex scrubbed at his face. “Juliet is extremely important to her. I’m sure she’d wish to go.”

“I agree, which is why we will quickly wrap up our negotiation and then the three of us will set out. Your home isn’t far from there, so perhaps we could…” Ben trailed off.

“Of course. My home is your home.” Then he cleared his throat. “But if you don’t wish to make the journey, my mother could surely travel with Tillie as her chaperone.”

Ben grimaced. “I had better go. While your mother is more than capable of managing a normal debutante, we are discussing Tillie here.”

Alex hid a smile as he rose. “I’ll tell Tillie. When do we leave?”

“Tomorrow. First thing,” Ben answered as he rose too. “It’s not like Juliet to need help, which has me worried on her behalf.”

Alex understood. Which was why he left the study and searched the house for Tillie. He found her in her workshop. He stepped in as quietly as possible, not wanting to interrupt whatever task she was engaged in, but she dropped the tweezers in her hand and raced into his arms. “How did it go with my brother?”

“Very well,” he answered. “At least in terms of our marriage contract. The negotiation was over before it had even begun.”

“I knew it,” she gushed her mouth peppering his with tiny, darling kisses. He could lose himself in those little touches. “But I’m still so glad.”

“Me too,” he answered, easing back. “But he did have other news.”

“What?” she asked, her brow furrowing. “Is something wrong?”

As quickly as he could, he told her of what he’d learned as her face went pale. He held her tight. “We’ll leave first thing in the morning.”

Tillie nodded. “Good. If my friend needs me, I want to be there.”

Gently, he brushed her hair back from her face. For a woman who claimed not to understand feelings she sure had loyalty down to…well…a science. “You will. And we’ll help her however we can.”

“Thank you,” she said, kissing him again. “I love you, Alexander Greenburg.”

“And I love you,” he answered with another kiss of his own. And then two more. Because he and Tillie would be two planets in the same orbit forever.
