P.P.S. Attaching the sketch of a bunny.

Still your favorite sister,

Sam

January 22, 1806

My Dear Sam,

I’ve missed you very much and would love to see how much you’ve grown. Your sketches never fail to put a smile on my face. The bunny, the reindeer, the geese—my soldier mates tease me saying I am collecting a farm. Do be sure to sketch some pictures for them too. I am certain they are jealous they don’t have anyone sending sketches their way.

Not all is cheery at war. Disease swept over these parts and many men have fallen. But not I. I am as healthy and safe as I ever was. And I am certain it is because you, My Angel, are watching over me.

P.S. I am afraid the frequency of my letters cannot be attributed to having a brother in the office of the Secretary at War. However, nobody can say for sure. I shall write as often as I can.

P.P.S. As soon as I am back, I shall spend as much time as you like riding with you.

Your fateful charge and soldier,

Ben

Dear Soldier,

We are setting off to London soon. This will be Isabel’s debut season. She is nervous, but I am certain she will be the diamond of the season, don’t you agree? Mama and Papa are very proud of her.

I am joyful we’ll get to see Adam too. We haven’t seen him much since he joined the War Office. I just wish you could be here with us. I miss you terribly. I shall take my duty as your guardian angel seriously, so that we see you back soon.

P.S. These are the last sketches of the countryside for a while. In the next correspondence, you will get London scenery.

Forever,

Your Angel

Dear Sam,

I wish I could be there to walk Isabel into her first ballroom. Please, send me a sketch of her in her ball gown. I’ve missed so many of your events. Perhaps I shall be there to escort you to your debut ball.

My comrades are jealous of your frequent bulky correspondence. They say they wish they had an angel watching out for them too.

Love,

Ben

Dear Soldier,

Tomorrow is my come-out ball. I am all nerves and sweaty palms. It is a good thing wearing gloves is a must, or I would be absolutely embarrassed.

Isabel has been a diamond of first water ever since her come-out. I don’t think I can live up to her success. She was constantly lauded by the patronesses of Almacks, now she is being courted by the Earl of Stanhope. Everybody in the family is certain he will propose by the end of the season. I am happy for her. She deserves the best. But I can’t help but feel obligated to do just as well. I am afraid to disappoint Mama and Papa if I don’t do the same.

P.S. I am attaching the sketch of a bee for you. So you are as agile and elusive as a bee on the front lines. Also, adding some flowers for your comrades. I shall be happily looking out for them too. I have enough power to guard everybody.

Forever,
