“Perhaps…” Evie gave a little shrug.
“And also, I have something to confess.” Sam fidgeted in her seat.
“What?”
“Remember the story about how I met Lord Ashbury?”
“Yes?”
“It wasn’t the only time we’ve met.”
“It wasn’t?”
“No.” Sam stood and started pacing. “I recognized his voice. He was the gentleman in the dark room I encountered at the Bainbridge ball!”
“No!” Evie’s eyes widened.
“Yes!” Sam threw up her hands. “I am quite certain it was him, although I don’t think he realized that.”
“Oh, no!” Evie started chuckling, her shoulders shaking in mirth.
“Oh, you, stop, this isn’t funny!” Sam swatted at her friend.
Evie leaned out of her reach. “You have to admit, it is a little funny. My groom-to-be saw your bare legs before he saw mine.”
“Oh, God, Evie, where are your thoughts at?” Sam shook her head, grinning.
“Probably not where they should be, or I’d find an answer to my predicament easily.”
Sam sobered and said after a pause, “Promise me you will think about this carefully, Evie. You can find someone better. Someone who is not rude and overbearing. Someone who will fall head over heels in love with you.”
Evie laughed at that. “The longer I wait for said someone, the more I think he doesn’t exist.”
“Perhaps he does. Perhaps you just haven’t met him yet.”
Evie cast her eyes down, playing with the fabric of her skirts.
“Or maybe you should at least look for someoneyoucan fall in love with.”
Evie looked up with a vulnerable expression on her face. Her gaze was liquid and her mouth in a small pout, and Sam just wanted to hug her and make everything better.How does one go about falling in love?Evie had been so confident she would make a love match from the very first that nobody doubted it.
