“Anything else?”

Sam thought for a while before responding. “You said that you can’t give affection and love to your wife.”

John nodded.

“Then I want at least friendship.”

“Agreed.” He stretched out his arm toward her in a request for a handshake. She walked closer to him and pressed her palm into his. John’s fingers came around her hand in a tight grip, and then he tugged on her arm. She started forward and crashed into his chest. Sam looked up at him, startled, as his face descended toward hers.

He caught her in a warm, sweet kiss again. He brushed his mouth over hers, then gathered her closer and touched his tongue to her lips. All her senses fired up in anticipation of the same wicked feeling she’d gotten the last time he ran his tongue over her lips. But at that moment, the floor creaked, and she heard a harsh clearing of the throat.

John and Sam both jumped back like guilty adolescents caught in mischief.

“I hope that means you two are betrothed.” Her brother’s low voice came from the direction of the door. Sam couldn’t quite meet his eyes. She nodded.

“Yes, My Lord,” came John’s confident voice.

“I expect a short engagement,” Richard barked. “Now, I believe this interview is over. Ashbury, please, proceed to my study so we can draw up a betrothal contract.”

John took a step in Sam’s direction, took her hand, and kissed her fingers. She looked up at him, still blushing fiercely. John gave her a wink and walked out of the room.

Richard lingered a moment or two in the doorway. “We’ll talk later,” he finally said and left the room without giving her an opportunity to reply.

She stood there frozen before she collapsed into a chair and covered her face with her hands. It was difficult enough to recover from the heat-inducing kiss her fiancé just gave her. But then her eldest brother had witnessed it. That was absolutely embarrassing. Absolutely. Embarrassing.
