“You can’t keep making Iskandar your scapegoat,” I said when he reached me.
“Why not? He never disagrees. Right, Iskandar?”
“Yes, sir,” he said dully, causing Gale to grin.
I looked at him. “You are free to join my team if your boss is unreasonable, Iskandar.”
“He would not—”
“Noted, ma’am. Thank you. I will keep it in mind,” Iskandar said quickly.
“You do realize that is a demotion, right?” Gale replied, looking at him with a frown, but Iskandar stood the same as always.
“It would be an honor to serve the queen,” Iskandar replied.
“Not if you are already serving the king,” Gale shot back, waiting for him to agree. He said nothing, though, and giggled. “Wow, Iskandar, and here I thought we were as close as brothers.”
“I am an only child, sir.”
At that, both Wolfgang and I snorted, trying to hold in our laughter. Iskandar’s digs were always effortless. Gale looked at us both. Wolfgang stopped, clamping his lips down hard.
“I’m waiting for this little one to come so I finally will not be ganged up on by you lot,” Gale declared.
I rolled my eyes, nodding for Wolfgang to open the door. However, just before he did, we heard a very loud buzzing, and it was odd because it came from Iskandar.
“Forgive me, I forgot to leave it in my office,” Iskandar said, reaching into his pocket and silencing his personal phone…seeing it, Gale grinned.
“Gasp, do my eyes deceive me?” Gale questioned. “Did Iskandar the Rock, the straight arrow, the rule keeper…forget a rule? Is that your personal phone—”
“Oh my gosh, let him off the hook. He’s human. It’s a phone. Come on.”
“Odette, these moments are very rare for me—”
“Come on.” I took his hand, pulling him into the room. “Please let us know when the doctor is here.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Wolfgang said, closing the door.
“I was only teasing him a bit, no need to protect them both so much,” Gale snickered, glancing around the room. “It really is like a hospital suite in here. I would never have guessed.”
“Why do you like to tease them both so much?” I asked, moving to sit on the bed, kicking off my two-inch heels.
“I tease Wolfgang because he is young and naïve. I tease Iskandar because he reminds me of Arty,” he said honestly as he took the chair beside me. “Though he’s a little more…straight-laced. And outside of you and the rest of my family…maybe Balduin also. They are the only ones I can still be myself with.”
“Now I can’t tease you when you say it like that.”
Knock.
Knock.
“Enter,” he said, and I saw what he meant as he sat straighter, his face turning more serious, and entered…royal mode. I did it, too, but seeing how quickly he shifted reminded me how small our circle really was.
“Your Majesties.” She bowed to us both. “How are you feeling, ma’am?”
“I am all right. I’m feeling a lot of kicks now.”
“Kicks are good,” she said, taking her seat and beginning to prep. “So I got your notice that you didn’t want to find out the sex.”
“Yeah, we just want to be surprised,” I said and laid back, lifting my blouse over my bump. Gale lifted his hand right above my face and reached up to take it.
