“That’s fine. I will just do a checkup and show you the little one’s face.”

“Face?” Gale’s head whipped over to her in shock. “You can do that?”

She nodded, and I shivered as I felt the jelly on my stomach. “Yes, we can. It’s not going to be crystal clear, of course, and the fetus will still be small, but you will be able to see a bit, so long as the baby is not hiding from us.”

I squeezed Gale’s hand as I felt her begin to click away.

“So far, so good,” she said, allowing me to breathe. “I will show you both your baby…and there the little one is, saying hi back.”

I looked up to see… and I was shocked at how clear it was already. I could see lips and a small nose, a hand, which was up as if the baby were saying hello. I couldn’t believe it. My eyes started to tear up, and when I looked over at Gale, he was speechless, just staring at the image. His eyes glazed over for a moment. I guess he finally noticed me staring at him because he glanced over to me, a large smile on his face.

“Boy or girl, they look like me.”

I scoffed and pointed. “That is definitely my face.”

“In your dreams! My family’s genes are very strong,” he replied and looked back at the doctor. “Can you print this out?”

“Already have, sir,” she said, pulling out the image from…I had no idea where.

Gale took it, still grinning. He turned to me and held it up to the side of his face. “How do you not see it?”

Rolling my eyes, I focused on the doctor. “Everything is okay, right?”

“Perfect, ma’am.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. So long as everything was okay, I didn’t care which one of us our kid looked like.

“Oh my, this is brilliant,” my mother gushed as she looked over the photo.

“Let me see!” Eliza rushed, holding one of the two dogs she supposedly bought for my birthday in her arms, while the other slept at my mother’s feet. She had failed to tell me how big those little terrors would grow up to be. The one in her hand was already twice as big as the little puppy from February.

“Aww, let’s hope the little prince or princess looks like Odette,” she said and glanced up at me. “We wouldn’t want them stuck with that ugly face.”

“This is the reason why I don’t allow you to carry them when they are born. Your head has been damaged since all those years ago when I dropped you...you can’t even recognize the magnificence that is before you,” I shot back.

“You dropped me!” She gasped, looking at me and then to our mother. “He dropped me!”

“Once or twice—”

“Once or twice?” she exclaimed. “Why would you give me back to that monster after the first time!”

“You lived, didn’t you?” I snickered. I knew I had dropped her once, but I couldn’t remember the second time.

“Odette, you cannot leave your child with him!” she said to Odette as she pointed at me. She looked between us, more than amused.

“Obviously, I wouldn’t drop my own child, Eliza; they won’t have such a big head.”

“Okay, Odette, would you please?” Eliza frowned, shifting the dog to the other hand. Odette turned slightly and kicked my foot.

I glanced at the very weak kick. “Is that the best you got?”

Odette shrugged. “Well, she hasn’t given me any new information recently, so…”

“Wow.” Eliza’s voice stretched. “Is that how it is, Your Grace?”

“Huh?” Odette tilted her head to the side. “You must forgive me. I couldn’t hear you. The baby is kicking.”

At that, I truly did laugh. What was that excuse? It made no sense. Eliza opened her mouth to say something, but the knock at the door stopped her.
