And I felt good. Looking around…I found I liked this little town with all its quirky people and shops. Leaning into Gale, I whispered, “I know there are so many other palaces but do you think we can come back here eventually one day?”

He kissed the side of my cheek. “Odette, wherever in this world you want to go, I will take you. Just say when.”

I couldn’t wait to get back on the train with him. However, to do that, we needed to move through the press, who was waiting for us as always.

“Your Majesty, you both look so in love,” a female reporter said to him as we stopped to speak with them as normal.

We always did it in a new town. However, the moment I saw the woman’s press badge hanging from her long neck, I wanted to scream at Balduin. What was he doing? She was from The Morning Eagle.

“I hope we do not just look it to you,” he said to her though I was sure he saw the badge as well. “I hope you know we really are.”

“Even with all the scandals published of late?”

“Scandals? What scandals?” He smiled at her. “I honestly don’t know how anyone could think of scandals, especially after the performance we just witnessed.”

“Are you enjoying the trip so far, ma’am?” another reporter cut in before she could get another word in. “Everyone has loved your coats this season. In fact, lookalikes are selling out all over the country.”

“Really? I’m honored. Just as I am each time I come to another town. This was amazing.” I looked back to the children waving, and they cheered, waving back. “I love singing, and to do that with such a gifted little girl was touching. It made my day.”

“Sir!” the woman from The Morning Eagle tried to cut in again, but another reporter spoke over her.

“Ma’am, what are you excited to see next?” he asked me.

“There are so many places. I don’t know. We will be back in the capital for Christmas. But Gal—the king has told me about the beautiful valleys which will be covered in snow at Molenlare and the fine dessert to have at Épilimar. The list is endless.”

“Ma’am, do you mean Molenlare and Épilimar,” the same damn reporter from The Morning Eagle asked me, pronouncing them differently, and panic rushed through me like a waterfall, as I could see the next headline.

Shit!

SHIT!

And I was doing so well!

The Morning Eagle

“Molenlare and Épilimar”

What can we say?

A visit from the queen and she can’t even pronounce two names of her new country.

Maybe she was trying to distract by showing off her musical talents? Does she want to be a singer more than she wants to be our queen?

Is this just a stepping stone for her career?

If that is the case…well, bravo. She should become an actress as well.

Chapter 16

She tossed her coat off and threw herself onto the chair when we reached the living room of the old stone cottage lodge we would be staying in. We always left after spending one night. Amersborg didn’t really have a good major hotel, and we no longer owned any property here, so we rented out a small cottage lodge to stay in.

“It was not that bad,” I said to her, which made her head whip back at me.

“I just messed up the names of two major cities in front of the whole nation!”

“You are worrying too much about it. It was a slip of the tongue. It happens to everyone.” And no one would have made a big deal about it had it not been for that damn reporter. The Morning Eagle truly never let up.
