Page 14 of Fated To Be Alpha

My wolf isn't entirely on board with that plan. He wants to mark her already. Tomorrow is the mating moon and he's half-crazed that we haven't made her ours yet.

“Hey,” I greet Ryker when I see him standing on the other side of the gate. “Let me in. I need to get to my mate.”

“You haven’t bitten her yet,” he says calmly. That’s my first warning that things here aren’t going to go my way.

“I know. I’m working on it.”

He raises an eyebrow at that, and I roll my eyes.

“Ryker, stop messing around. Let me in.”

“Why haven’t you marked her yet? Your wolf must be going crazy.”

“He is,” I push out through gritted teeth.

“Then why not give in and claim her?”

He seems genuinely perplexed by why I haven’t and to be honest, I’m starting to wonder why I didn’t from the beginning too.

"She's human. She's… not who I wanted for a mate."

"You don't get to choose that. Fate decides for you."

“I know, I guess I just had an image in my head and it was hard to let go of.”

“Because of your father.”

“Yeah, sure, now open the damn gate, Ryker.”

“No.”

“Excuse me?” I ask, my voice low and deadly.

It’s a warning to him that things are about to turn into a fight, but he doesn’t listen or maybe he just doesn’t care.

"No, I'm not letting you in. She doesn't want to see you and I can understand why. I mean you locked her up in your tower, Koda. You treated her like a prisoner, and made her sleep on a cot in a cold room all because fate threw you a curve ball? That's not her fault."

Shame hits me, filling me up and only pissing me off more. I had to do those things.

Didn’t I?

A memory of her trembling body rushes through me, followed by her cries. Jesus, she must have been so scared. After what she told me about her father, I probably triggered her in every way imaginable.

“Fuck,” I mutter to myself, finally realizing all the shit I’ve tried to ignore the last few days. I’m a monster. “Alright,” I say a little louder. “Then I’ll apologize and we can move on,” I grit out. Ryker shakes his head.

“Like I said, she doesn’t want to see you.”

“And you’re going to help her? You’re choosing her over your oldest friend?” I snarl, my hands wrapping around the bars of the gate as I lean in.

“Yeah.”

I start to shift and he studies me, looking amused.

"Isn't that strange?" my soon-to-be-dead best friend asks. I don't answer him. I'm too busy losing my skin. "Let me ask you a question," he continues. "Why are you willing to fight your oldest friend for a girl that you didn't even want? For a girl that you locked up like a prisoner in your castle?"

My wolf whines inside of me. I fucked up. I’ve known it for days, from the moment the bars closed in the tower, but I’m finally letting myself feel the weight of my actions. I’ve been fighting with myself, my memories of my father and everything that he tried to teach me. I’ve been fighting with my wolf and what we both want.

All to please a man I hate. Where’s the logic in that?
