I arrived at work early, like I normally did each day, with a cheerily swing to my hips. “Morning everyone,” I sing-songed as I waved to Chrissie and Freddie at the front desk and headed across the tiled reception floor towards the staff entrance.

“Hey… Everleigh, you got a moment?” Chrissie shouted just as I grasped my hand around the silver handle of the staff door, having pulled it open a sliver.

“Yep.” I turned around and allowed the door to shut behind me. I ran my hands down my black uniform, and repositioned my handbag onto my shoulder before appearing at her side.

“Did you hear about the flagship hotel?” she questioned. Her eyes flitted towards Freddie as he rolled them upwards and answered the telephone.

“No… what flagship?” I questioned as I leaned onto the desk with my elbows poised on the edge. Chrissie's eyes twinkled at me with a cheesy grin on her face.

“Mr. Renton included it on the bulletin. RP is upgrading a hotel – The Wilden – but with luxury amenities. First level of its kind. For the highflyers.” She winked as Freddie placed the receiver down and swiveled his chair over to us. He wrapped his arm around Chrissie, letting the outline of his crown tattoo peep out the edge of the fabric of his rolled-up shirt sleeve.

“Stop teasing her and tell her where it is… hey.” Freddie cut in, aware of Chrissie’s fondness to overdramatize things at times. She dropped his arm from around her, giving him a glare that made me chuckle.

“Midtown Manhattan, a few minutes from Times Square.” She squealed in delight. “Mr. Renton also said on the bulletin that positions are available now… I've sent my application across. Deadline is soon though.”

I dropped into the free chair on the opposite side of Chrissie and let out a long steady breath.Fuck. Get yourself together now.

“Right… thanks guys,” I stated with my composure in check as I stood up and headed towards the staff room.

I couldn't miss the whispered words between the duo on the desk though. “Told you she'd want it,” and an unmistakable high five slapped together behind my head.I smirked with a giggle as they were both right, it's not like I hadn't mentioned my dreams hundreds of times to them before. I placed my hand inside my bag and began fishing around in search of my cell.Got it.I picked it out and unlocked it with my thumbprint, before seeing a message from Tye Renton displayed.

Fucker. What's going on?I opened the icon and scanned the message back and forth with my eyes.

Tye – I'm not coming this month. Sorry. I’ve an emergency here to deal with but sending backup – my business partner. Don't do anything I wouldn't. Tye.

Great. Looks like I'm in search of a new guy to create orgasm central for me. Tye was good for no strings attached sex, too. The danger of fucking the boss was a constant thrill, and one I loved to take.

Pity really. Well, plenty more catches to be had. Tye Renton isn't the only guy this girl could have. Time for some fun, but first I was going to take a chance on me and my future and check the bulletin. If I didn't at least look, I know I would regret it.

The morning flew by and my hands were itching to load the bulletin feed and scroll through the advertisements; being Concierge Assistant Manager had its perks, but I wasn't scared to get my hands dirty. If we were shorthanded then I never hesitated to jump in on the action and today was just one of those days.

Luckily, all the staff got on well. We had a great rapport and the friendly banter made the days fly by, but we didn’t take advantage. Once we clocked on, everyone knew who the boss was. Chrissie especially, who had a habit, on the grapevine, of conveniently needing to run errands throughout the hotel, but not on my watch. It was peak season for tourists and if I was delaying my tasks that needed completing, she could deal with my commands, even if she sulked behind closed doors doing them.

“Right, I'm off in the back if you need me!” I shouted when the influx of arrivals had calmed down for the day and I felt they could cope better.

“Sure…” Chrissie said as Freddie waved over his shoulder at me, preoccupied in sorting out a keycard issue.

I logged into the system and pulled up the bulletin board to read the various vacancies; dreams are worth a risk. I clicked the concierge management assistant vacancy and began to fill my details in. I could say I gave it my all, I mean if you don’t try, you’ll never know what could have been, and then you’re just left wondering what if? That is not how I want to live; I had a no regrets kind of attitude. I’d held this position for eighteen months so it’s not like I’m inexperienced.

I clicked the submit button and held my breath. Life brought new challenges and I’d face them head on, starting with this application, another aspect of my five-year plan I needed to achieve. It was done, now all I could do was wait.

Fucking Tye, no wonder he was fuming when he entered the office earlier. Gone was the normal monthly review of the company I had expected to undertake that day; at least that could be done through video conference if needed. Instead, he’d thrown grenades and missile launchers into the room and waited for the explosions to begin – some imminent and others would be time bombs waiting to explode.

Infiltration in any company was a huge panic, but in ours, it could wipe out everything. I understood Tye's reaction, but I never once questioned that it would affect our New York set up. I loved the place; it was where I’d been raised after all. I just hated the one person who pulled all the strings inside the area. The guy who gave me that ultimatum three years ago.Stone Parker, he doesn't deserve the term Dad.

A tremor ran up my spine just at the mere name of the place. The risks I’d have to take when I stepped foot back on his turf, and now I had a boarding pass with my name written on it in my hand. I sat in Departures and waited for the call to board. I know that my life was about to be flipped on its axis and throw me straight back into the wolf's den. It's just how long could I go unnoticed. Hopefully the whole time.

All I must do is one task; get the job done and get out. If I kept my head low and avoided anyone not linked with the RP group, everyone would be fine. She would be fine.

“Calling all first-class passengers for flight 159 to JFK airport. We are now boarding…” the woman's voice echoed over the tannoy system around the departure lounge.I grabbed my briefcase and small leather pull along and marched forward, steadying my breaths as I went. It was just one foot in front of the other, it's all I had to do.

“I've got this,” I muttered to myself as I placed my baggage down and handed across my boarding pass to the air steward.
