“I’m here, shh,” I reply as Jake runs across and grabs her from me. My teeth clench together at her being ripped from my side.

“Oh, sis,” Jake says. His eyes water and hands shake. “Come here, I’ve never been so scared in my life.”

With tears streaming down all our faces, Blaire whispers, “I’m sorry, Jake. I didn’t know… I’m fine.”

“We can talk about that later,” Jake responds quickly, looking between the two of us. “EMT needs to check you fully over and the APD wants to talk to you. I have to go and deal with something first.”

“Jake, don’t do anything stupid,” Blaire tries to say, but her voice can’t carry after him. With his shoulders back and head high, he starts marching straight for where the ambulances are.

“I’ll go after him,” I say when I see Greg and Levi approaching. “Tell them everything, baby, and I mean everything. Let’s send this fucker down.”

I plant a kiss on her lips and smooth my thumb across the top, before I walk away. “Do not leave her,” I hiss at Greg and Levi. “I’ve got to go calm that fucker down,” I say, pointing at Jake and marching after him. I tell you now, he may act calm and collected but if he loses his cool and he’s with the wrong person, it could jeopardize everything.

“Jake, leave him alone,” Dylan shouts. When I approach, I see Freddie standing guard with his arms crossed. “I know you want payback, but this isn’t the way.”

“Get out of the way, DC, I mean it. You’re not even on the payroll yet,” Jake snaps, taking a step forward. “I just want to smash his face a bit and rough him up. He fucking hurt my sister.”

“He hurt my girl, he tried to take my world,” I add from behind him, making him turn around. Everyone drops their gaze, not able to meet his eyes. “But this isn’t the answer. Let Greg do his job. Don’t ruin him going down for this.”

“He’s right,” Freddie replies quietly, “don’t you want him to pay?”

“I do,” Jake huffs, and his shoulders drop, “and he will. I will make sure of it. That fucker will be going behind bars, trust me on that one.”

BLAIRE

My body is tired and sore, but according to Aiden, that’s to be expected after having CPR performed on me and dealing with smoke inhalation. Twenty-four hours after the fire and I am finally free of the hospital and happy to go home but not to the apartment; to Aiden’s house. The simple two up and two down with its minimal decor and furniture makes me realize how much of a guy’s pad it is. I escaped on the condition that I have constant rest for the next few days and any concerns to come straight back. Jake isn’t happy with the arrangement, especially as Chief Clark gave Aiden leave to care for me too. He argued that he should have been the one to watch over me.

The apartment needs repair. Luckily, they contained the fire to just the one room and it didn’t spread down to the bakery but still, it did enough damage that I won't be living there for a while. Aiden hopes forever; he likes me with him, in his arms and if I’m honest, I do, too.

The locals have been dropping off supplies all week, making sure I’m fine. It really has made me start to feel part of the community. Simon even came with some of those cookies I gave the guys at the station, but sneakily, I took one or two for myself. The only person who’s not come on their own accord is Jake. I’m not standing for the silent treatment between the two most important guys in my life anymore.

“Aiden, have you a minute?” I ask, calling him from the kitchen while I make myself a delicious club sandwich.

“Always,” he replies, sneaking up behind me as he wraps his arms around my waist and kisses the column of my neck. Bubbles of excitement set off in my stomach. “But you can give me the knife and sit down while I finish this.”

“I can do it,” I admit wearily as I grab the kitchen side and take a deep breath, gathering my strength on my wobbly legs. “I need to do this.”

“I know you want to, but you need to rest.” He kisses my head gently and guides me back to the sofa, passing me the multicolored throw that Kennedy brought me. “Let me grab your sandwich and we can talk.”

“Okay.”

“What’s on your mind?” he asks, bringing me a tray with a fresh flower in a mini vase and a glass of orange juice to complete the package.

“Thanks, baby.” I place a kiss against his lips and it ignites a warmth in between my thighs. “I’ve invited Jake over to clear the air. I need to tell him everything. I know I’ve harmed your friendship, Aiden. I’m so, so sorry for that. I came between you guys. I put you in between a rock and a hard place by giving you my secrets. That’s all on me, but I’ll fix it today, just wait and see.”

“You don’t need to do anything you don’t want to do, baby. You know, that right, but you also know, I think it’s the right thing to do. Jake loves you and won’t judge you, but it may help him understand why you didn’t tell him. He’ll eventually hear it all in court and then the hurt will be so much more, and I don’t think it will be good for any of us. Rich is the past.” He kisses each of my knuckles. “I’m your future, baby. Jake just needs time to realise.”

“But you didn’t,” I cut in, staring into his dark mesmerizing eyes. “You saved me, you brought me back and now you have me forever more.”

“Blaire, I love you so much.”

“I love you too, Aiden,” I reply, my mouth crashing down onto his quickly as he moves the tray onto the floor and lifts my body across his lap.

“Rest, Blaire,” he snaps frustratingly. His hard member pushes against my thigh and my body hums for more, until a knock at the door disturbs us.

“Jake,” I sigh with a glance up at the clock. I notice Aiden rearrange himself and blow out some deep breaths. “Damn it.”
