“This is nice,” she whispered. She trailed her fingers across my chest, rubbing back and forth over my t-shirt.

“It is.” I closed my eyes and trailed my hand down her back. I slipped my hand beneath her shirt and trailed my finger in circles against her skin, eager to feel her softness. “Your skin is so soft,” I whispered.

I felt her lift her head and gaze up at me. “My lips are softer.”

I turned my head to her, unable to keep the grin off my face. “Does my girl want me to kiss her?”

“She wouldn’t be opposed to the idea,” she said in a cheeky tone.

I laughed as she leaned up on her elbow, bringing her face closer to mine. I expected her to go slow but as she thrust her tongue between my parted lips, I knew that I didn’t want this day to end as I tightened my grip around her waist and held her closer to me.

She slipped her hand up my chest and tangled her fingers into the back of my hair before she moved her lips firmer against my own. She knew we were supposed to be going slow but as she moved closer to me, I knew that slow might get ramped up.

It was good to know that she wanted me and I wanted her just as badly but it was more important to me that I didn’t fuck this up. I couldn’t fuck this up.

I pulled away, needing to put some distance between us. I needed to slow this down.

Her lips were swollen red from our kiss and if we were at hers or mine—or I guess Luke’s and Freddie’s really—I would be taking it up a level but heavily making out in the middle of Central Park was a no-go. Getting arrested on our first date wasn’t going to get me a second date with her. Although with Isobel, you never knew. She kept me guessing, that’s for sure.

“What’s next on our agenda?”

She blew out a frustrated breath before she placed her hand on my chest and rested her chin on it. Her beautiful eyes shone up at me and I could see that I was majorly cockblocking myself.

“We haven’t done the paddle boats yet.” She scrunched her face up as she stared up at me and I could see that she was thinking. “We could do that or…” She gave a dramatic pause, waiting for me to take the bait.

“Or what?” I asked her.

“Or…” A cheeky smile appeared on her face. “Or we could go back to mine and get to know each other a little more.” She bit her lip and the way her voice dropped and turned soft; I knew that her mind was exactly where mine was.

I laughed at her when she said that. “Why do I think you don’t mean it as in the conversational way?”

She rolled her eyes at me and stood up, holding her hands out to me. “Come on, soldier boy. Let’s go and get a boat.”

I took her hand and let her pull me up. We quickly packed up the picnic and made our way to The Point where we’d get a paddle boat and I’d spend the next hour ferrying us around the lake.

As Isobel steered us back to the dock while I pedaled, I couldn’t contain my grin as she stood, wobbling slightly as the boat rocked. I reached out and grabbed her hand, holding her for stability so she could climb out of the boat and step up on to the wooden deck. She was almost stable but at the last minute, she fell back a little as the boat moved and I shot my hand out, grasping the only part of her I could hold to keep her upright. Her ass.

She laughed as she climbed up, getting her footing and stepping out of the boat. “Such a gentleman,” she teased.

“Sorry.” I chuckled as I stepped out of the boat, joining her on the deck. “I thought you were going to fall,” I said. I positioned my hands on her hips and began walking us forward with her back to my front.

She leaned her head back against my chest and I smiled as she placed her hands over mine that were now resting on her stomach. “So, I suppose you thought that grabbing my ass was the perfect way to keep me vertical?”

“Maybe.” I dipped my head and kissed her cheek before we stopped at the luggage collection point. After grabbing our basket, we headed to the path and began walking toward where one of the exit paths were. “A guy’s gotta grab what he has to, right?”

“Apparently,” she muttered. She took my hand as we walked side by side. We walked in silence for a while until Isobel spoke again. “So, do you want to come back to mine?” She flattened her lips together and it made me wonder if she was nervous. “Or do you want to go to yours?”

“I’m not sure if Freddie or Luke is there,” I replied. “Is Chrissie…?” I left the question open-ended as I waited for her to fill in the blanks.

She made a face and I knew my answer. “Chrissie will be there by now. Her shift should have finished and she’s most likely just getting in.”

I raised my hand and waved down a taxi as we exited the park. “I’m not sure about Luke and Freddie.” I jogged to the cab that stopped for us and held the door open for her. I waited for her to get in and then I quickly climbed in beside her. After giving Freddie’s address to the driver, I placed the picnic basket in between us and turned toward her. “We can see if they are there and if they are…”

“Hold on.” She held her finger up and placed her phone to her ear. “Hi, Luke. Where are you?” She nibbled her lip as she waited for him to respond. “Oh, that sucks that you have to cover for Robert.” The grin on her face disagreed with her disappointment for Luke’s tone. “What about Freddie? Oh, bummer.” She reached over and held her hand out for mine. “Okay, yeah. See you later. Bye.”

I took her hand as she hung up. “Don’t keep me in suspense.”
