“Okay,” I said, fighting back the urge to sleep. If I slept, then at least I could get better faster. Be closer to him again.

“Chrissie are you okay making sure Isobel takes her medication and rests?” he asked, his eyes focused on me as if questioning what he needed to do. I could sense the inner battle within. He didn’t want to leave me here without him but he had to work. He couldn’t just call in sick for me. It wouldn’t work. I needed Christopher to take a stand and let others help as he continued with his day. I’d still be here when he finished. “It’s just…”

“Go to work Christopher,” Chrissie stated. “Del hates it if you’re late and you know this one.” She looked at me and smirked. “I’ll keep her perfectly occupied. We need to catch up anyway.”

“I’d expect nothing less from you two but if you need me…”

“Christopher, I will,” I promised quietly as he gave me a sweet kiss goodbye before Chrissie showed him out.

I counted down the moment Chrissie shut the door. I knew the questions would be swirling around in her head and in reality, all I wanted to do was close my eyes and sleep. This girl was impossible; no wonder she was one of my besties. She was a woman after my own heart, someone who always protected me and supported me at every opportunity but she was also my biggest cheerleader. I had a feeling that no matter how bad I felt, unless Chrissie gets the gossip she wanted, I’d have no chance of the respite I needed.

“Now… I need all the gossip and fast.” Chrissie’s eyes gleamed the moment she noticed my attempt at closing my eyes as she walked straight toward me. She lifted my legs that were still covered by the blanket off the sofa before sitting down and placing them down on her lap. “I’d pause the television too because otherwise you’ll be bitching later that you missed what happened.”

“You’re not going to rest, are you?” I snapped. The pain had dulled a little, thanks to the medication kicking into my system.

“Would you if it was me?” Chrissie winked as I thought about the question and I slightly shook my head, trying to do as little movement as possible. “You’d be going mad for every detail. Remember Everleigh?”

Damn, did I? She had me there!

“Okay, well Christopher and I are together. Will that do?” I said, reaching for the glass of water before Chrissie intercepted me. “I’m not an invalid.”

“No, but yourguyasked me to take care of you.” She smirked as I huffed. “I saw the PDA. I get that you’re together but how, what, where? Have you?” She wiggled her brows at me as I chuckled. “OMG! Is that why you asked about my shifts? Isobel! Have you and Christopher been doing the dirty in the apartment…?”

“Chrissie! Hold on a minute.” I felt my cheeks reddening at her direct questions.

“You did!” she squealed, clapping her hands together. “I bet he’s a real control freak, too. He certainly looks like it.” She winked. “Do I need to do a deep clean?” She had mock horror displayed on her face as she grinned widely at me. “I’m kidding. God, you’re so easy to rile up.”

“I really care for him, Chrissie,” I said truthfully. “I know he’s Luke’s friend. I know that if things go wrong, it could affect the dynamic between us all, but I can’t resist him; the temptation.” I let out a large breath as if finally knowing my feelings will help me feel less insecure. It felt good that finally I had someone who could justify my reasoning that I’m not going crazy. I also felt powerful that my heart could actually contain all these emotions. “It’s like this tethered bond between us and nothing can snap it. Trust me, we have had some moments that have tested it to the maximum but it’s not broken.”

“Isobel…” she whispered.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.” I sat up and reached for Chrissie’s hand. “It’s just been such a whirlwind and with hiccups to deal with, too,” I admitted. “I don’t want us getting carried away. I want us to find our feet first.”

“I can understand that…” Chrissie nodded, she stared blankly ahead before she shook her head and focused back on me. “You don’t want everyone involved unless you know there is something to be told. You want to be certain.”

“Exactly.” I smiled. “That’s why I kept it hidden.”

“So, Isobel, does that mean you’re certain about Christopher?” she asked cautiously, standing up as I yawned, feeling the tablets effect on my body.

“I’ve never been more sure of anything else.” I let the words out as Chrissie stood up and I shuffled my feet away. I turned onto my side and snuggled into the sofa, pulling the covers up to my face. “He’s my everything.”

“He seems it,” she admitted. “Rest, Isobel. Sleep tight.”

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

CHRISTOPHER

“What’s going on?”

I glanced up and was surprised to find Mr. Granbler standing in the doorway to my office. He had his hands clasped in front of him but he had a warm smile on his face. “You have been staring at that page for the last twenty minutes.”

“Sorry.” I moved the laptop back a little and rubbed my eyes. “I just…”

He waved me off as he entered the room. “You don’t need to explain.” He took a seat on the other side of the desk and faced me. “I’m out of the office the next few days at a business conference so if you have any issues, either speak to Dawson and he can get hold of me or send me an email. I’ll have limited access but I can check them in the evenings.”

“Uh…” Fuck, was he telling me I was on my own while he was away? “Sir, I’m not sure…”

“You’ll be fine.” He nodded his head politely at me with a warm smile gracing his features. “You’re not a complete novice and if anything comes up, I know you can handle it. Not that anything should come up but if it does, you can still reach me.” He stood up and stared down at me, clearly waiting for my agreement. “Okay?”
