“Only if you have time, that is,” I said as Christopher slid out of bed and I watched him hungrily as he started getting dressed. “I know what you’re thinking but you’ll have to wait until tonight, prettygirl. You’re damn insatiable.”

“I can’t help it,” I replied as he rounded the bed and kissed me longingly. “I’ll see you soon. Oh, and Christopher...”

“Don’t worry, hot chocolate with all the cream. Bagel must be toasted, fully loaded but with scrambled egg.” Christopher winked at me and headed out the door, leaving me to my thoughts. “I’ll be an hour or so.”

The moment Christopher left I forced myself to sit up. I was overwhelmed that in such a short amount of time my man could know me so well. It was as if he’d memorized all my quirks and stored them within his brain, just for when a time may come when he needs to know that snippet of knowledge about me. I’d never had anyone take that level of care to get to know me like that before, I thought to myself.

I was ripped from my thoughts when suddenly the rolling in my stomach became more.Oh shit!

I quickly shot out of bed and yanked the covers back off me, nearly tripping over the edge as I went. I ripped the door open as I covered my hand with my mouth and made a rush for the bathroom.

“What’s the emergency?” Chrissie shouted the moment she saw me barreling out of the room in my thin camisole and shorts combination that definitely wasn’t suitable attire whilst sitting on the sofa. “Isobel!” she called.

I couldn’t help it. I crashed by the toilet bowl and started to be sick, my stomach squeezing tightly. I felt someone grab my hair and begin rubbing my shoulders, attempting to comfort me.

“It’s okay, just let it out,” Chrissie said until my stomach gave way and said enough was enough. “I’ve got you.”

I fell backwards on my haunches and took a moment to gather my breath. I pulled myself to stand as Chrissie passed me some tissues. I cleaned my mouth and ran some cold water in the sink and splashed it onto my face and pulse points, hoping it would take the heat out of my features before I turned to face Chrissie.

“Antibiotics hey…” I muttered as I headed to the door in an attempt to get back to my room and get changed. Unfortunately, I was stopped when her hand shot across the entrance, grabbing the frame and stopping me in my stride. “Chrissie, I’m—”

“You really want to go down that path with me?” she joked. She put her hand on her hip as she gazed up and down at me. Suddenly, her gaze stopped and focused on my stomach.

Had I spilt something?I dipped my chin and glanced down, squinting my eyes in confusion as I shrugged my shoulders. “This is me that you’re talking to.”

“I’ve been sick, what’s the big deal?”

“Isobel, it’s the morning. You look a little pale. Shall I make you a coffee?” I wretched again and turned around, beginning to dry-heave again as I leant over the toilet. “I’ll be right back,” Chrissie whispered into my ear.

“Chrissie…” I wiped my mouth, fighting back the horrible taste in my mouth. “Where are you going?”

“The pharmacy, silly.” She grinned at me and ran from the room. She didn’t get very far though until she stopped and turned back to face me. “I won’t be long, okay?”

“Chrissie… I’m not…” I looked down at my stomach as I knelt on the cold tiled floor and shook my head. “I’m just not, okay?”

“Just humor me, please. If it’s not then it’s okay but if it is, then it’ll still be okay.” She squeezed my hand briefly as she left me alone to try and get myself together before she returned.

I cleaned myself up and headed into the bedroom, throwing on some loose lounge pants and my slouchy matching grey top. I allowed the thoughts to pass through my head. I couldn’t be pregnant. I was certain it must be a bug or a reaction to the medication. I brushed my hair up into a low ponytail and took a quick peek at myself in the mirror and my now less swollen face. Chrissie was right, I was pale. Nothing that a little blush couldn’t fix though I thought as I added some color before I returned to the living room to be greeted by a knock at the door.

Why didn’t she think to take her keys with her?

“Keys!” I exclaimed the moment I threw open the door to be greeted with Christopher standing in his fitted suit, holding out my drink and a wrapped up bagel for me.Damn he looked fine.“I thought you were…”

“I guessed baby…” Christopher answered, taking in my appearance as I shuffled from one foot to another. I knew that Chrissie had probably skipped to the front of the line in the pharmacy and was rushing back now. Patience wasn’t one of her strong points. “I assume—”

“Chrissie had to pop out,” I quickly interrupted him. “She didn’t want to be long or have to leave me whilst I was feeling you know… ill. But she said it was important,” I filled in, babbling away before I reached out for the drink and the bagel from him. The moment the smell of the grease lined my nose my stomach heaved and I fought the sickness quelling in my stomach. “Thank you for these,” I gritted out.

“It’s my pleasure but baby…” He kissed me gently on the lips and I prayed he couldn’t tell I’d been sick. “I’ve got to go. Del’s away on business and I need to ensure I don’t let him down.”

“You could never do that,” I quickly retorted, thinking how I could get Christopher to leave without becoming suspicious of my actions. The last thing I wanted was for him to see the real reason I wanted him gone. “You’ll have to let me know how you get on later tonight. You’re still coming here when you finish?”

“You couldn’t keep me away,” Christopher announced before turning around and nearly bumping into Chrissie as she kept her head down low as she approached. Fuck! I was glad she lifted her head in time and slid the brown bag into her handbag without Christopher spotting it. “Ah, this one thought it was you when she opened the door. Look after her when I’m busy grafting, won’t you?”

“Of course,” Chrissie replied. “I’ll always keep an eye on this one.”

I gave him a small wave goodbye and let her into the room. The moment I closed the door I handed the food and hot chocolate to Chrissie.

“I need a minute,” I said, taking in a long breath as Chrissie placed them down on the worktop and pulled out the brown bag containing the three different tests from her handbag, alongside a bottle of water. “Chrissie!”
