I nodded my head and stood. “I’ll see you boys later.” I walked away from the table and I immediately patted my suit pocket. I had been doing that all day, panicked that I would lose it. The ring was literally burning a hole in my pocket and I knew I needed to pop the question soon. Otherwise, she’d be finding the ring in my pocket and that wouldn’t be much of a proposal.

Isobel deserved romance.

As I approached the door to Isobel’s and Chrissie’s I was surprised when it opened before I could knock.

“That was good timing!” Chrissie teased as she stepped out looking glamorous in a sparkly dress. “She’s inside. She just put a movie on as she didn’t expect you home so soon.”

“Have a good time,” I said as we swapped positions. “Be safe.”

“Will do.” She gave me a small wave as she walked down the corridor. “Don’t wait up!”

I chuckled as I watched her go down the hallway before I entered the apartment. I smiled as I saw my pretty girl lying on the sofa, watching an episode ofStranger Things.

“Am I just in time?” I toed my shoes off and turned to face her. I froze as I saw the redness under her eyes. “Have you been crying?”

“You’re home!” She reached for my hands as I leaned down and kissed her. “I didn’t expect you to be home so early.”

“Me neither.” I squatted down in front of her. “Have you been crying?” I asked again.

“No.” She waved her hand dismissively. “I took a nap earlier. This is how I look when I’m sulking. Puffy cheeks, messy hair…”

I reached forward and tucked a loose curl back behind her ear. “You’re still my pretty girl.” She smiled when I said that. “Can I get you a drink? Or something to eat?” I stroked my thumb across her cheek, loving the feel of her soft skin.

“I wouldn’t say no to a hot chocolate.” She beamed at me with a cheeky smile, knowing that I’d make it for her.

“With chocolate sprinkles?” I asked.

“Yes, please.”

“You got it.” I moved toward her and kissed her forehead before I stood and walked to the kitchen. “What episode is this?” I called back to her.

“I put the last season’s finale on and I was going to watch the new episode with you when you got in,” she called back.

I couldn’t stop the smile if I had tried. She was a sweetheart. Always thinking of others and I knew that I could easily spend forever loving her. I grabbed two mugs and scooped some chocolate powder into each, adding an extra scoop for her mug. After steaming some milk, I added whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles to her mug, stopping to pop a biscuit wafer in her drink.

“Can I have a biscuit in mine?” she called but by that time I was already back to her.

“Already done.” I leaned down and kissed her lips before I placed the warm mug in her hands. I set my mug on the table next to the sofa and took my seat on the empty cushion. “Come on then.” I tapped my legs for her to place her feet there.

She smiled at me and I returned it with a wink as I tucked the blanket around her legs. I grasped her ankle gently and rubbed my thumb up the arch of her foot. She moaned as I did that and it went straight to my cock. All her sounds did if I was honest.

I focused my attention back on the screen and as we watched Steve and the crew battle the upside down, I knew that nights of just me holding her as she falls asleep in my arms would be something I could very quickly get used to. She was my girl and she would be my woman for all of our moments to come.

The good, the bad and even the downright scary ones.

After the first episode I leaned over and trailed my finger over her arm.

“I’m going to go and get changed.” She nodded as I got up and as I entered her bedroom, I set my jacket down on the bed before going to the bathroom. I quickly washed my hands, hating that they shook as I rinsed the soap off. “Pull it together,” I muttered to myself. I splashed some water on my face, attempting to cool myself down. “You can do this.”

I dried my face and hands off with the towel, freezing as her sweet vanilla scent stirred my senses. It was a scent I could live off of forever.

Opening the door, I tensed when I saw Isobel sitting on the bed. I could have played it cool as I saw her leg resting against my jacket but as I moved my hands back to her, I knew that I was out of luck and I was out of time. In her hand, she held the small black box that I had been carrying around with me for what felt like too damn long.

“Uh…” I self-consciously reached up and scratched the back of my neck. She flicked her beautiful eyes up to mine And I was surprised that she wasn’t firing questions at me. She was just looking at me—so open and honest—as she waited for me to get myself together. “Well…” I chuckled as I just stood there and tucked my hands in my trouser pockets. “Of all the ways I planned to do this, out of them all, this really wasn’t one I expected.”
