“I take it I don’t get to know.” I huffed. “You know I don’t like surprises.”

“You’ll love this one. After all, my soon-to-be-wife, I only want the best for you,” Christopher reminded me as I glanced into his eyes and saw the love shining back at me. “Anything for you.”

Iwas restless all throughout the night. The excitement coursing through my veins and our little bean making my stomach roll didn’t help. I couldn’t believe that the day was finally here. Today was our wedding day.

I hated the fact I had to say goodbye to him for a few hours but I knew that the next time I’d see him he would be in that stunning suit of his waiting for me to reach his side at the bottom of the aisle.

I kissed Christopher on the lips in the corridor, giving him a slow torturous kiss that I knew both of us wanted to develop into more, but pulled back and tapped him on the ass.

“Come on. If we don’t stop now, we know what’s going to happen.” I chuckled as Christopher leant over, placing his forehead against mine as I breathed him in. “I mean we’ll be late.”

“You’re meant to be late. It’s tradition.” Christopher chuckled as I just started to walk backwards and reached for the handle of my room.

“Yep, but not the groom.” I pointed at him, twirling my finger. “If we didn’t stop, we’d both be late—rocking up looking like hot messes—late.”

“You know you’re not doing a great job at deterring me from just saying fuck it and throwing you over my shoulder and giving that ass of yours a few nice slaps before throwing you on my bed.”

“Christopher…” I groaned. “Save those thoughts for tonight.” I winked, shaking my ass at him. I opened the door up and turned to face him standing in the doorway. “I’ll see you at the chapel and yes, I’ll be fashionably late.”

“I can’t wait.”

The moment I closed the door I headed over to my belongings and began unpacking my white summer dress, my make-up and hair accessories. I sat myself down at the dressing table and stared at the reflection of myself.

I was alone. I should’ve told the girls,I sighed.

I choked up at the thoughts in my head. Christopher was right. I should have had Everleigh and Chrissie laughing and joking around, helping me get ready as they donned bridesmaid dresses. Instead, I’d decided just the two of us should be here rather than be logical and have the people I love surrounding us. I was selfish. I never thought for two minutes about the others properly—Christopher even—what did he want?I know he said he wanted me and for me to be his. I just needed to speak to someone and that couldn’t be my soldier boy.

I picked up my phone and dialed Chrissie’s number, placing it on speakerphone as I began tackling my hair that resembled a bird’s nest.

“Hey,” I answered the moment she picked up the line. I heard a few voices before the shutting of a door behind her. “I’m sorry, did I disturb you?”

“No, I’m just with Everleigh. Dawson was on a call. Are you having fun at Luke’s?”

“Yeah,” I answered, allowing the lie to fall off my lips like a bad taste. “I’m just getting dressed. Christopher and I are heading out soon. I just missed your voice, that’s all. These hormones are making my emotions haywire and what with work and everything else…”

“Isobel, you’re rambling,” Chrissie stated sharply. “Hormones are a bitch at the best of times. You know me and my PMS, girl?”

I couldn’t hide the chuckle as I wiped my eyes.

“That’s my girl. Now, do that glitz eye that I taught you with the pale lip. It’ll make him swoon. We’ll catch up when you’re back from Luke’s. I’m off until Tuesday anyway.”

“Thanks Chrissie. I needed that,” I admitted. “I really did. Have fun with Everleigh and say hello to Dawson for me. I’ll see you soon.”

“Bye.”

The moment I put the phone down I felt the strength return to me. It was as if Chrissie had channeled it through the line to me. My girls would understand why I’d gone in this direction; they loved me, so all they’d care about was that I was happy.

I took Chrissie’s advice, doing my makeup on par with her suggestion. It was like I had a little bit of her with me and I styled my hair in loose natural waves, pinning it to the side with a broach so it hung over my shoulder. All I had left was my dress and the moment it was on I was ready. I took a final look at myself in the mirror and nodded. This was it. The last time I was a Miss. Within the next thirty minutes I’d be Mrs. Matthews, a wife.

I parked outside The Little Vegas Chapel and headed through the entrance door. I gave my name to the lady on the entrance who just smiled at me.

“We’re running slightly behind but if you could just follow me…” The woman indicated a room to her right. “We don’t want your groom catching sight of you too soon, do we?”

I shook my head, following her direction, gobsmacked at her announcement. I didn’t know weddings at chapels got delayed.

Is something wrong? Is Christopher, okay? Had he decided that he couldn’t go through with it?
