It only took about five minutes for Remington, Paxton, and Stellan to come through the doors and silence the whole crowd. At least they had taken me seriously. They’d been very timely in their response. Maybe they were finally starting to learn that I didn’t fuck around.

Although they definitely didn’t fuck around either.

I briefly wondered why Cain had been by himself tonight before I got distracted by them looking around the crowd, I assumed for me. I slipped behind one of the fancy, pretentious Corinthian columns in the room and watched as they moved through the room towards where the drink buckets were. People were panting as they watched them, their faces lighting up with hope as they approached, thinking they might speak to them. The girls would push out their boobs, the guys would stiffen their shoulders and try their best to look cool.

It was all pathetic looking, really.

When would they realize that men like the kings considered everyone else to be sheep? They were nothing to them.

It kind of turned me on to watch the guys cut through the crowd like a pack of predators. They moved like a unit, totally in sync with each other. They didn’t spend very much time in that room before they were heading back towards me. I braced for them to search the crowd where I was standing, but they headed up the stairs without a glance.

I was kind of wishing for a camera as I pictured them searching the rooms for the surprise I’d left them. They would probably think Cain was dead at first when they saw him, with all the blood and whatnot.

People went back to partying after the guys disappeared upstairs, although I did notice a high number of people suddenly having a need to go upstairs. The bathroom was probably a happening place right about now.

I was getting bored as I waited for them to come downstairs, and I was tempted just to leave. Maybe they were going to wait it out in that room until Cain “came back to life.” That probably made the most sense. Or maybe they were going to call an ambulance.

I was about to give up and leave when Paxton came pounding down the stairs, his face a completely blank mask. I watched in confusion as he walked over to the large room where everyone was dancing, and he raised his fist. “Let’s get wasted,” he yelled before he began to walk through the crowd who once again parted like the Red Sea as he passed through until he got to the buckets. I snorted as everyone began to offer him red cups filled to the brim with the house drink.

My attention was so focused on Paxton that I almost missed Remington and Stellan walking down the stairs with Cain in between them. Which would have been the point of Paxton’s little show, to distract from Cain. It looked like the poison was wearing off. He just looked really, really drunk as he struggled to help Remington and Stellan get him out the door. You had to be looking closely, or know Cain really well to notice that his eyes were completely alert…and enraged.

Giddy anticipation surged through me as they disappeared through the front door that had somehow miraculously cleared.

I pulled out my phone. You good?I texted Jenna, not wanting to go into the same room where Paxton was holding court, suddenly the most gregarious person I’d ever seen. She responded a few seconds later:

This guy is so fucking cute. I’m getting lucky.

I smiled, feeling a dash of wistfulness that I wished I didn’t. What would it be like to meet a guy, a normal guy, and get butterflies that didn’t end up in spankings, bloodshed, and being hunted down like an animal in the dark?

Probably completely boring.

Or at least that’s what the crazy part inside of me whispered.

Let me know when you’re back at your dorm, I texted back before heading towards the front door.

I’d just gotten to the door when I felt Paxton’s gaze slicing across my back. I turned and looked back, not surprised at all when I saw him standing in the middle of the room, his eyes definitely on me.

I waggled two fingers at him and then winked before turning and striding out into the night.

All in all, a great fucking night.

And the fun was just beginning. Whatever Cain came up with to punish me was guaranteed to be good.

I couldn’t wait.

Chapter12

Aurora

Iwoke up in the morning in the quiet of my room and smiled to myself as I gazed up at the ceiling. I’dsleptlast night, as well as I’d slept in Pax’s arms before he betrayed me. But I didn’t need Paxton. I didn’t need any of these men.

I rolled onto my side. It was still early; I slept with the curtains wide open because it made me feel a little less trapped–even if the windows were nailed shut–and for now, the world outside the Sphinx was as dark as it was inside.

That was why I caught the faintest light emanating from the electric outlet opposite my bed. I frowned and rolled out of bed, staring at it.

It was a camera.

Suddenly keenly aware someone might be watching me as I watchedthem,I forced myself to yawn and rub my hands across my face sleepily, pretending to be casual when my heart was beating a wild tattoo against my ribs. If the guys were watching me, well, maybe I would give them a show. I could definitely have the chance to use this against them. I could use this to feed them misinformation on where I was going and what I was up to. I couldn’t wait to send them running off in the wrong direction.
