Guess I’ll have to forgive you now since you’re going to make me a grandmother.

I totally understood what this was going to mean to my mother as well. Since I’m an only child, this was going to be her first great-grandchild.

Yes little. You’re going to be spoiled and loved.

“Please don’t tell her yet. Actually, don’t tell anyone. We want to wait a little longer and will announce it when we’re ready. Okay?” she asked.

“Of course. I’m just glad you told me. And Abby, you’re going to be an amazing mother. You already have what the baby needs.”

“And what is that?” she asked.

“Love. That is what a child needs. To be loved and know they are loved,” I said sincerely.

“Thanks, Mom. I needed to hear that. You always know what to say,” she said, then started crying. “Oh, boy. Here come the tears again. I swear, I cry at everything lately. There was a toilet paper commercial today that I started crying about because our toilet paper isn’t as soft.”

“I know, Abby. Your emotions are going to be tough for a few months, but they will calm down just like the morning sickness will stop. And before you know it, you’ll have your sweet baby in your arms and you’ll forget all about this,” I said.

She sniffed and said, “I just hope Timothy can forget too, because I can barely stand myself sometimes.”

“Women have been having babies since the beginning of time. And men haven’t stopped loving us yet.”

“Mom, I gotta go. I think I’m going to be sick again. Love you,” she said and ended the call.

Love you too.

I didn’t have to worry about such things when I was pregnant. Her father wanted nothing to do with being a parent, knowing his child, or supporting us. With his attitude, I was glad he’d chosen not to be a part of her life. I’m just thankful Abby didn’t make the same mistake. She has someone who loves her by her side.

Of course, I didn’t go through it all alone. My parents, mostly my mother, stood by me all the way. She even came into the delivery room. I’d been very lucky and wouldn’t change anything about my life.

Except for Rick. I should’ve told him what his leaving did to me. Maybe he’d have come back.

But if he had, I’d never have taken off to Las Vegas and partied like I did. And I wouldn’t have had Abby. Through my heartbreak with Rick, I also got the greatest joy I could’ve ever wanted. And now I’m going to be a grandmother.

My cell phone rang again, and I answered without checking who it was.

“About damn time you answer your phone,” Meg said. “Have you been ignoring me?”

“Why would I do that?” Because you’re pushy maybe?

“That’s what I was asking myself,” she laughed. “I’m the perfect friend.”

“That’s what you keep telling me,” I rolled my eyes.

“So. What did the guy look like?”

“What guy?” I asked. No way did she know about me and Rick.

“The guy who left the note. You were going to meet him for dinner. Or did you chicken out like I thought you might?”

It was easier to let her believe that. “You know me too well.”

“Kathleen won again,” she said.

“Won what?”

“I bet her ten dollars that you’d actually leave your room and go meet the guy. Hell, I even said you might take him back to your room and give him a test drive. Boy was I wrong,” she grumbled.

I bit my bottom lip. It was kind of gross that my friends were betting on my having sex on this cruise. “What is it with you guys and my love life?” I demanded to know.
