“Well, I still live there, and I’m not moving,” she said adamantly.

It was firmer than I expected from her. Was there something, or maybe someone, holding her to that state? We had talked about moving south, to someplace warm and by the ocean. Maybe she didn’t trust my intentions. Can’t blame her. I let her down once. Why would she believe that I won’t do it again?

“I’m not asking you to move,” I said. But I’d like a…”

“Second chance?” she finished.

Is that what I was asking for? I didn’t deserve one. “How about we take it slow?”

“Rick, you spent the night making love to me… several times, by the way. That is not what people do when they want to take it slow. But I’m okay with forgetting how amazing it felt and starting over.” She got up, walked over to me, extended her hand and said, “Hi, I’m Val Rizzo. Nice to meet you.”

Well, this sucks.

I took her hand, but pulled her down onto my lap and kissed her hard. Then I looked into her eyes and said, “This is as slow as I’m willing to go.”

She laughed. “I thought you’d see it my way. Now, can we finish the rest of the conversation for later? Right now, I’ve got something else on my mind.”

I ran my hand up her bare leg and stopped at the bottom of her jean shorts. “As long as it has to do with being naked, you have my full attention.” Scooping her into my arms, I carried her to the bed.

One time. That’s all. Then we talk.

But as I started to undress her, I knew that conversation wouldn’t take place anytime soon.
