“It’s okay. It was a long time ago,” I replied.

“No. I can tell that you still love him. And from the look in your eyes, you two not being together is just another tragedy. Is there anything I can do?” she asked.

I shook my head. “All I want you to do is be happy. Because that’s what I plan on doing too,” I said.

I’m just not sure how I’m going to pull it off.

“Okay, Mom. I’ll be happy. And…” She covered her mouth and ran out of the room.

“Guess all the talk about Rick was too stressful,” I said to my mother, trying to cover Abby’s morning sickness.

“Yes. Stress is not good when you’re pregnant,” she stated.

“How did you know?” I asked, surprised.

She chuckled. “Haven’t I taught you anything? Mothers always know.”

Sighing, I asked, “Well, I’m the mother now - when does the knowledge pass down to me?”

She patted my hand and said, “It did. A long time ago. Val, you’re an amazing mother. And when you doubt that, just take a look at your daughter. She’s a carbon copy of you.”

I got up and wrapped my arms around her. “Thanks, Mom. I love you.”

“I love you too, Val.” Before I sat back down she added, “Now can you do your poor old mother a favor?”

“Sure, anything,” I replied with a laugh.

“Call him. Tell him how you feel. If you don’t, you’ll never really know what could be. I don’t want you to spend the rest of your life wondering,” she said.

She’s right.

“Okay, Mom. I’ll call him. Just not now. We have other things to think about. Like that sweet baby on the way,” I said.

“You told her?” Abby said when she came back into the room.

“No. I guessed. Your mother had that same green look on her face when she was trying to hide her own pregnancy,” my mom said. “So, who wants to go shopping for cribs?”

I rolled my eyes and Abby shrugged. “I guess we do.”

Mom smiled. “That’s the answer I was looking for.”

It was good to have something other than Rick to think about. Too bad Abby’s only in her first trimester - I could sure use a baby to distract me right about now.

I’d promised my mother I’d call him. But I never said when.
