Trisha

It’d only been a little more than two weeks since I’ve seen Mikal, but I was nervous as though this was our first date. I was not even this nervous back then.

I knew why. When we first went out, I had no expectations of there being more than one date, one dinner. I was so wrong.

Following my gut, like Kevin told me to do, I was about to put it all out on the line. Mikal was about to learn exactly what he meant to me. If I was right, I was not the only one in love. Of course, uttering those words for the first time still was nerve wracking.

I looked at the clock on the kitchen wall and it was almost eight. One thing I knew about Mikal was that he was prompt. Sure enough, my doorbell rang. No turning back now.

I walked over and opened the door but stepped aside, standing behind it. I didn’t want him to see me until he had entered, and the door was shut.

Mikal walked in and called out, “Trisha?”

I pushed the door close and only then did he see me standing there. His mouth gaped over and his eyes roamed over me as though discarding what little clothing I had on.

“Do you like my…outfit?” I asked.

He nodded. “It is…interesting. Love the black top hat, but the black cape might be a bit…much. I…take it we’re not going out for dinner.”

I shook my head and said, “I was wondering if you are the type of magician who is in need of an assistant.”

“Are you applying?” he asked, still looking puzzled.

“I am, but I can only work nights and weekends. Would you like to sit down while I interview for the job?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Are you sure you’re not…tired?”

I bit back my laughter. Mikal had no idea what was coming next. I’ve dreamt of this moment since it came to mind.

“Not at all. Now go sit and prepare to be amazed by ‘The Great Trisha’,” I said, over dramatically.

Mikal chuckled and went to sit on the couch. I walked over to the table and grabbed my magician’s wand, then I dimmed the lights so they were barely on.

“It would help if I could see the magic trick,” he said.

I waved my wand in the direction of the battery-operated flickering candles on the coffee table in front of him. In my other hand, I held the remote and pressed the button, turning them on.

He clapped. “Very good. You’re hired. Now did you want me to order us a pizza?”

“I’m not done. Do I look like a one-trick wonder?” I asked.

“I apologize. Please continue.”

Walking back to the table, I swapped out the remote for the candles for the remote for my Bose CD player. I approached him again and waved my wand. “Let there be music.” On came the country song ‘Til You Can’t’ came on. It had been paused where I wanted it to be. If you got a dream, chase it. Then I hit pause again.

“Being my assistant is your dream?” he asked.

“I am hoping it is your dream,” I said, then pressed the second play button and another line filled the room. If you’re gonna love somebody… I hit pause again and I finished the song myself. “Then tell them and love them with your whole heart until you can’t.”

“Is that the way the song goes?” he questioned.

“It’s the way my version does. I stepped around the coffee table to stand directly in front of him. “I have one last trick, but it’s going to need your assistance to make it happen.”

I reached my hand out and he took it and stood up in front of me.

“Should I have brought the blindfold for this one?”
