“Well, that came about when I went out for a girls’ night with my younger sister, Samantha. After a couple of shots of Tequila Rose, the topic of work changed and we…we started joking about…sex. I jokingly said that I should shop for people who were too…embarrassed or didn’t have time to go out and purchase the items for themselves. As we discussed a variety of…items, I realized that we both had quite a long list of things couples might benefit from. We laughed and said that we had thought of enough stuff to fill an entire room in a house,” she said.

“Hence, the sex room,” I added.

“I never planned on going through with it. I mean, it was fun to think about, but to actually open a business shopping for sex toys seemed insane. But while I slept off my slight hangover, Samantha had gone home and done some research. I guess I should tell you that she was a marketing major, so she loves this kind of stuff. Anyway, she showed up at my house bright and early with all the data showing how this could be not just a fun, but a lucrative endeavor. I told her I’d think about it, but she pretty much gave me five minutes. She had already downloaded all the required forms, completed them and all I had to do was sign and submit them to the state.”

I shook my head. “Sounds like Samantha and Bob have a lot in common.”

“Like what?” she asked.

“Thinking they know what is best for us. However, in your case, it seems to have worked. Not that I have a need for such a room, but you do have an eye for creativity and design. If I was married, maybe I’d even have put it to use,” I surprised myself as I said it.

She smiled and thankfully only took it as I had meant it to be. A compliment. “Thank you, Sam.”

“Did Samantha pick the name for your business as well?” I asked.

For the first time, she blushed. “No, that was my idea.”

“Nice. ‘Rooms by Desire.’ And your tag line is catchy too. ‘The adult playroom’. I even checked out your website after you left last night. Not because I was shopping by the way, but I just wanted to confirm that you were legit.”

“I understand. I’d have done the same. Actually, I might have called the police but trust me, I’m more than grateful that you didn’t,” she said, reaching over and gently touching my forearm. “I couldn’t sleep at all last night thinking about the total unprofessional mistake I made. It…it could’ve cost me all I’ve worked for.”

That unfortunately was the truth. Maybe if it’d been a man in my home instead of an attractive brunet, I might not have been quite so forgiving. Then again, I probably would’ve had the police called on me as well for knocking him out once I found him in my house to start.

“You don’t have to worry about it. Trust me, I’m not going to go around telling anyone about a sex room in my house. So no one needs to know a thing about this,” I said.

Although I was enjoying the feel of her hand on my arm, she slowly pulled it away. “I can’t believe you’re being so…understanding. Why?” she questioned.

“You might have screwed up by not confirming Bob was authorized to have work done in my home, but there was no intentional harm meant. I could tell that you put a lot of work into making it something…special,” I stated.

“I did,” she said softly. “And I’m really sorry that I thought….”

“Thought what?” I prodded when she didn’t finish.

“That you and Bob were…a couple.”

I laughed. “I must admit, that was more shocking than coming home and learning I’m the proud owner of a sex room. I can’t believe Bob didn’t correct you when you said it to him.”

Randi snickered. “I’m not sure he ever picked up on it. He was just so focused on me getting this room done for you by Friday afternoon that I don’t think he picked up on what I was saying. ‘I want this to be a huge surprise for Sam.’ And by the way, the look on your face said Bob accomplished that, even though he and I weren’t on the same page as to what exactly surprise meant.”

“Most people aren’t on his page. He’s almost sixty and acts like he did in our freshman year of college. I’ve long given up trying to change him.”

“Guess you two have been friends a long time,” she said.

I nodded. “I always said I married the only woman who hadn’t dated Bob.”

“Oh, you’re…married. I didn’t know.”

I shook my head. “Was. We married young and divorced young.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be. What we thought we had in common, we found out were only obstacles in our marriage. I was working for my father as a mason, and when he retired, I took over the business. That meant working longer hours. I guess she found someone who could give her what she wanted. Someone with a lot of free time to be home with her.”

“While you were out providing for the family. That really…sucks,” she said.

“Not a total loss. I have the most amazing son out of the deal. Danny has his PhD in Nuclear Science and now runs one of the largest nuclear plants in California.”

“Impressive. You must be very proud of him.”
